Donald Trump on Friday urged a roomful of voters to boycott the tech giant Apple so long as its chief executive, Tim Cook, refuses to comply with a court order to assist the FBI with hacking into the cell phone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook.
"First of all Apple better give the security for that phone," the Republican presidential hopeful said during a campaign rally in Pawleys Island, S.C. "What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time they give that security number. How do you like that?"
"I just thought of it," Trump noted, drawing applause.
"Boycott Apple," he repeated.
"Here's the thing, the phone's not even owned by this young thug that killed people," Trump said, claiming that the cell phone used by Farook is instead "owned by the federal government."
The billionaire suggested that Cook "is looking to do a big number... to show how liberal he is."
"We gotta get to the bottom of it, but we're not going to get to the bottom of it unless we use common sense," Trump said. "So I like the idea of boycotting Apple until such time as they give that information â I think that's a great idea."
Hmmmmm. You don't suppose that NYC authorities would run screaming to court to get those phones unlocked if they caught wind of Apple having a tool to do so, do you?
Them, and every other state and local law enforcement agency. And that's before private lawyers get in line, too - you think a divorce lawyer might want to see what's on the other spouse's locked phone?
So then, do I understand correctly that this would not be any more of a “violation” of phone records than in the old days with analog phones?
It was common for police and FBI to “tap” phones or if a crime was committed, request calling records and such from the phone company.
Isn’t this really the same, a legitimate request for records, but in this case some technical intervention is needed, but the principle is the same as asking phone company for the history or details of caller’s activity?
Trump’s on the wrong side on this.
WTF are you talking about? In what way did I "shoot myself in my cowboy boot"?!
Boy, the level of debate around here has degenerated to pathetic levels. You're probably proud of doing your part.
I believe Trump is saying this because he already KNOWS that Cook is going to stand his ground and go head to head with the Government.
Simply put: Trump appears to be ANTI-TERRORIST.
Cook will appear to SUPPORT TERRORISTS by standing his ground.
This happened before when everyone looked askance at what Trump said about ILLEGALS and a few days later the Kate Steinle murder occurred.
Oh, good lord. Another "Trump master plan" post.
There's no master plan here. Trump says what he thinks is conservative and the words make it out of his mouth before the thought reaches his brain.
If his "conservative theory" team corrects him later, he'll issue a clarification.
Are you trying to make a point? Wow.
Me too and real fast......Since I already voted for him via absentee ballot, it's a non issue at this point.
And just imagine a Hillary or Bernie administration overseeing an FBI with that kind of added surveillance abilities. Would you even be safe having a personal conversation where you were dissing the Queen Clinton or the Commissar Sanders? I doubt it. They would be looking for violations of their version of ‘hate speech’ 24/7, I’m betting.
Re: what Cruz really said vs. what the Trumpbots said he said.... I should have known better. My bad. You just can’t trust anyone these days.
Their argument is that the info is scrambled in a way that they can’t get at either, and after ten tries, everything is erased (eliminating brute force approaches). The government doesn’t like the erase part, among other things.
Thanks for the info.
I am not an Iphone guy and was not aware of this info.
Is the phone in question one with this security?
Thanks
Somebody 911 OFail and let him know John McAfee has offered to crack the phone for free. It said it would take his team about 3 weeks. No need for the new backdoor. Of course McAfee won’t even get a phone call.
I truly believe Trump does not understand what is going on with Apple. He’s thinking they just go into the one phone and get the info and that’s it.
Yeah, it looks like Apple could just send in one of their best tech guys to get into the phone in question. That way the FBI would have the info they want and the privacy of Apple customers would be safeguarded. What’s the problem? Government over-reach?
Ease up on the spamming.
Rick Grimes has two "i"s.
Pretty sure the phone in question is a “5c”...(owned by the County of San Bernardino by the way...terrorist’s work phone)....it has the type of security I mentioned. The newer iPhones (5s, 6 and 6s) add a fingerprint reader and a dedicated security “chip”.

Apple iPhone sales fall for the first time, says Gartner
Published: Feb 18, 2016 12:29 p.m. ET
Sales of Apple Inc. iPhone dropped for the first time in the fourth quarter last year, as the company lost market share in an arena that is increasingly being taken over by phone makers in developing countries.
In the final quarter of 2015, iPhone sales dropped 4.4%, cutting Apple AAPL, -0.21% market share to 17.7% from 20.4% in the same quarter of 2014, according to technology research company Gartner.
Okay!
