I just think the electorate is far more cynical and isnt interested in boilerplate “I will work hard to blah blah blah”, because they know it’s baloney.

There is a specific incident that wasn’t very favorable to him, but when asked in the debate he said he campaigned on that and he followed through on his promise to his voters. I can’t remember the issue right now because it wasn’t a big deal to me. But the media was trying to make it a big deal. If you watched the debates you would have seen it.
