Pope spokesman clarifies Trump comment
The Hill ^ | 2/19/016 | Lisa Hagen

A spokesperson for Pope Francis clarified the pontiff's criticism of Donald Trump's plan to build a border wall, saying that the remark wasn't "a personal attack."

"The Pope said what we already know, if we followed his teaching and positions: we shouldn't build walls, but bridges," the spokesperson said in a statement, according to CNBC. "It's his generic view, coherent with the nature of solidarity from the gospel."

"This wasn't, in any way, a personal attack or an indication on who to vote for," the spokesperson continued. "The Pope has clearly said he didn't want to get involved in the electoral campaign in the US and also said that he said what he said on the basis of what he was told [about Trump], hence giving him the benefit of the doubt."

Pope Frankie and Obama should quit living a lie and get hitched. Bishop Romney can perform the ceremony.

The problem for the pope is that once you say one’s “Christianity” is tied into building or not building walls, words mean things and everyone knows that discussing walls while touring Mexico is what it is. The pope lives behind a 35 foot wall and is a hypocrite with no credibility.

But he’s the infallible discerner of scripture don’t you know. His statement was so moronic, so non biblical it borders on heresy. I’d be wiling to bet this Pope off the top of his head does not even know how many books there are in the bible. He just proves being Catholic does not make necessarily make you a bible believing Christian. This is what you get when you go non solo scriptura, you go off the rails idiotic.

Sure. /s

He didn't announce the plans for his grandstanding border pilgrimage until 12/12/15.

The media wanted to use this as a Trump attack, but it clearly was not. More from the dishonest media.

The Pope did say it. Now his backtracking shows he is not only a lefty but dishonest. Rush reportedly declared that the Pope give Trump a “gift.” How many radical Syrian Muslims has the Pope admitted to the Vatican?

You forgot to add the persecution of Christians by Catholics in Mexico. It has been reported that Catholics have burned down the homes and churches of Evangelical Christians in Mexico. This has been going on for some time now. Why didn’t the Pope speak on that? This is something that is not Christian of the Pope at all!

“...this from someone who lives in a walled city, the wall having been designed to keep muslim invaders out.”

Verily verily to which I might add,

“Something there is that doesn’t love a wall”
“to keep the wall between us as we go”
“Good fences make good neighbors”

divine scripture from Robert Frost

It seems the popes attack on Trump was seen for what it is, and the rank and file Catholics are not happy. Maybe they are closing up their wallets.

Politics. He keeps stepping in it.

Who gets to clean the poop off his red slippers?

This was a “lose, lose” for him even among people who really like this pope.

My wife, Italian, says he seems to make these wacky things when he’s at high altitude in an airplane, and the Italians wonder whether it’s the cabin pressure that makes him this way.

For me, a Catholic, I’m struck by his overwhelming vanity.
