how is he supposed to put it to bed when it ultimately requires a court to rule on which can’t happen until one is actually a candidate and even then not until someone with standing files a suit?

that’s got to be the stupidest reason I’ve ever heard to not support a candidate! “I’m pulling my support because this guy didn’t deal with an issue that he had no possible avenue to deal with”

Common - you’re deliberately missing the point. Maybe Cruz couldn’t have had filed a federal case to challenge his eligibility before becoming an official candidate but most certainly has had PLENTY of chances to do so since. His failure to do so says a lot to me about his political ambition versus gambling with the future of America.
