Donald Trump's visit to the Iowa State Fair was a spectacle...
Rob Stutzman...witnessed the scene and experienced flashbacks to the hordes his client, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, encountered during his unlikely bid for California governor during the 2003 recall election.
"It's celebrity appeal," Stutzman said.
"Both of them are very skilled at using their celebrity to attract public and media attention,"
They are wealthy celebrities, so universally branded that they are known by their first names.
Schwarzenegger and Trump have a flair for theatrics that play well on the evening news. Some examples: Schwarzenegger dropped a 3,600-pound wrecking ball on an Oldsmobile Cutlass to protest the tripling of a state car tax. Trump offered children free rides on a helicopter emblazoned with his last name at the Iowa fair.
The two are confident, unabashed and self-promotional.
"I knew I was a winner, I knew I was destined for great things," Schwarzenegger wrote in a 1977 biography.
"Sorry losers and haters, but my IQ is one of the highest - and you all know it! Please don't feel so stupid or insecure, it's not your fault," Trump tweeted in 2013.
Both tapped a vein of discontent among disaffected voters...
Both also displayed an immunity to controversy that would have felled other politicians.
Trump, who is now espousing traditional conservative views on issues such as abortion, was once a registered Democrat. Schwarzenegger became a Republican upon his arrival in the country in 1968...
Still, conservative Republicans were skeptical of Schwarzenegger because of his liberal views on social issues such as abortion.
"The hurdle an Arnold Schwarzenegger had to clear or a Donald Trump has to clear is the jump from being a lightning rod for totally disaffected voters to being taken seriously," Sragow said, and that's "one that is not easy to make."

There are definitely a number of strong similarities. How it will all turn out, I can’t say.
“Well OK. Canada isnât overseas exactly.”
Well, Canada is abroad . . . so to speak. She fine, Canada, she is . . .eh?
“Oh wow. Another Trump campaign operative.”
Tell that to the Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, et al supporters.
If he does, good!
Even if he wins the election, the GOP could lose the Senate at the same time.
It's not like they're stopping Obama now, are they?
Trump's supported Democrats in Congress as much if not more than he has Republicans
But he's never been in elective office where he pushed leftist policies and worked with Democrats as most Republicans have.
A new GOP President can push the Republican Congress to do whatever he wants.
No such luck with a Democrat Congress. The Dems won’t appoint his Supreme Court picks. The GOP Congress would.
You bet ya.
:)
Who do you think you are kidding? The GOP has been among the walking dead ever since President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. The GOP unlawfully inaugurated the first ever foreign citizen, Chester Arthur, as President. The GOP has been playing straight man to the Democrats ever since President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was President, if not even earlier. Ted Cruz makes sounds and often acts like he is supposed to be a conservative, but he then proceeds to behave illegally, unethically, and contrary to immigration and other conservative issues whenever it serves his political opportunism the same as Trump, Rubio, and the others. In truth, the voters have been given two slates of nominees none of whom are trustworthy and/or legally qualified for the job.
Like Bush pushing through conservative policies with the GOP Congress in 2001-2007?
It’s not even possible to compare Trump with Schwarzenegger.
Trump has decades of stunning business successes in his lifetime, completely managed by himself.
Ahnold had a few movies under his belt; written, produced, and directed by others; and he was managed by agents. And most likely partially managed by the dirty rotten Kennedy family.
Arnold pulled himself up by his bootstraps all on his own. Trump was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, millions of dollars and countless business and political connections provided by his father.

Schwarzenegger has had a highly successful business career.[12][24] Following his move to the United States, Schwarzenegger became a “prolific goal setter” and would write his objectives at the start of the year on index cards, like starting a mail order business or buying a new car â and succeed in doing so.[19] By the age of 30, Schwarzenegger was a millionaire, well before his career in Hollywood. His financial independence came from his success as a budding entrepreneur with a series of successful business ventures and investments.
What are you arguing? That Trump will be able to push through better nominations and bills with a Democrat Congress?
You're an idiot. I bet you're the type of fool that pays for the postage on return envelopes seeking donations.
It’s perfectly possible both to compare and to contrast them. Why anyone would find this process fussworthy is beyond me.
