THREE men appeared before a Harare magistrate Monday charged with stealing an Iphone 6 belonging to President Robert Mugabe's youngest son, Bellarmine Chatunga.
Victor Josam (26), Tendai Makambaire (30) and Kelvin Mwandayi (27) appeared before Harare magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe.
They denied the charges and were released on $100 bail each.
Court heard that the phone is valued at $1,500.
Josam denied theft saying he bought the gadget from someone else, while Makambaire said his co-accused later sold the phone to him.
They were ordered to return to court on March 7.
Prosecutor, Venencia Mutake, had opposed bail arguing all three were a flight risk and likely to abscond since they are unemployed.
But this was rejected by the court.
Magistrate Chikwekwe said being unemployed was not a reason to refuse the trio bail.
He said even murderers are granted bail, adding the three were only facing charges of stealing a cellphone.
"The three are proper candidates for bail and should pay $100 bail each," he ruled.
Prosecutors say the theft occurred on November 7 last year, when the three suspects and an accomplice still at large targeted students attending at a function at St John's College in the capital.
Chatunga, while going to relieve himself, reportedly handed the gadget to his friend, Honour Mukudzei Rwodzi.
The suspects then approached Rwodzi and claimed that they had been sent by Chatunga to collect his phone.
Court heard that Rwodzi handed over the iPhone to them after which they disappeared into the crowd.
A report was made leading to the arrest of the trio and recovery of the phone.
Tell them to change the date on their iPhone to Jan 1, 1970, then reboot the phone and it reveals a really cool free hidden video game. ;-)

They stole the dictator’s son’s phone. They are lucky he didn’t give them the death penalty. They better get a ticket on the first flight out of the country.
