Why did they praise him? They praised him because he’s selling the same canards that they sell. He’s trying to tear down the nation with defeatism, conspiracy theories, and cynically using Code Pink/Michael Moore talking points. That’s beneath contempt.

It's not just that Code Pink praised Trump, it's that they were right to praise him, from their point of view. For Trump parroted Code Pink propaganda exactly, word for word.

It's not just that Carter endorsed Trump, it's that Carter was right to endorse him, from Carter's point of view. Cater knew that Trump was "malleable," i.e., without principle, and thus would make deals with the Democrats to the detriment of liberty.
