The effort was outstanding, on the part of our soldiers. And indeed Obama went out of his way to blow it to smithereens. But I would argue that the promise was not real. GWB sold (or tried to sell) us on two notions: Islam was a religion of peace; and Iraqis were freedom loving people.
I think careful observation reveals those promises to be false. Islam is not peaceful and the first instinct of a Muslim is to impose his will on everyone else.
Were these notions knowingly false on the part of GWB, or did he truly believe them at the time? It doesn’t really matter, does it. In retrospect, they were sadly mistaken and we still pay the price to this day for them. I would only add in closing that, even if the two notions were truthful, an honest reading of American politics would say that we as a nation did not have the singular purpose of mind to stay the course long enough to make it so.

I think we ought to own up to the fact that we might have needed to depose Saddam and even deal with terrorists in Iraq, but wishing a democracy on the Iraqi people was a big mistake. They needed a stern, if not unkind, kingdom. Democracy is getting them weakness and confusion and a fall into the power of a rabid Allah.
But we can’t let Donald get away with muddling all the issues together either. He doesn’t grasp Islam very well, and he needs to do that if he is going to be expected to deal with that problem as president.
Here’s where maybe Cruz’s light could be coaxed out from under his bushel basket. Christian faith vs. Islam is like day vs. night. IF Christian faith is done right. God (and especially so in Jesus) came to give; Islam like the devil seeks to kill, steal, and destroy.
Well if Trump gets this corrected or clarified, will you be willing to “Think things through” again at this point? Or will you now be dug in with a grudge?

Wishing a democracy on Iraq was not the best possible move.
If it somehow turns out well in the end, maybe after a few seasons of Russia stomping on ISIS hard, we ought to be thanking God and not thanking Bush or anyone else.
I’d want to continue on and ask Donald, well if you think it was such a flub, what do you suggest doing now? Besides just blaming people, which gets old after a while and doesn’t fix anything.

A miracle of God will be needed (and so far, if Cruz is that miracle, it’s a hidden one).
The old fashioned bible approach, of prayers made for kings and all who are in authority, focused especially on the future president whoever he may be, would be very apropos here. We have a dynamic situation and nobody may be able to handicap this race because the handicaps keep changing.
