How did the judge determine whether or not an autopsy was necessary to determine or confirm the nature and cause of death?

The way it usually happens. They call the attending physician if there is one (in this case there was a doc of record) and the JP talked to the responding LEO

That is usually all that happens

Take Scalia’s name and change it to Smith this would have been handled the same way.
