My point wasn’t about his piety so much as to correct the legalistic requirement of 10%. That said, many Christians donate anonymously; how can you be sure that Cruz hasn’t done exactly that?

But in this case, Cruz should have been open about, though not flaunting, any giving that he did.
If he’s going to present himself as some kind of spiritual leader, or maybe a leader who is spiritual, but not show any kind of charity, then that causes offense (in the Biblical, not the liberal sense) and may hurt the faith of others.
That’s the same reason why my past supervisors in the pastoral office always told me to make sure that there was a check with my name on it for the offering plate, or in the treasury. Not because I’m bragging about it, but because I’m the spiritual leader in this congregation and I need to set an example.
