United Technologies, the parent company of Carrier Corp, paid a tax rate closer to 12% last year on profits of over $17 billion.

Don't know where this $17 billion number came from. In FY 2014, Yahoo Finance shows
Income Before Tax 8,887,000
Income Tax Expense 2,264,000

Looks like about 25.5%.

I guess it's possible they doubled their profit between 2014 and 2015, but I'd be shocked.

Revenue at United Technologies, which also produces Pratt & Whitney jet engines and Black Hawk helicopters, rose 1.9 percent to $16.76 billion, it said on Wednesday. That was about $330 million short of analysts’ expectations.
