I still remember that blizzard. I think it was in either 87 or 88. Just West of Pratt, the Highway Patrol stopped all traffic and turned it around.
I had a 4wd pickup and thought that I wish they would let me go as I could make it. When they finally opened the road, I was astounded how deep some of the drifts were. At Ford, KS about 18 miles East of Dodge City, I saw 18 wheelers with just the edge of the trailer peeking out from the snow.
Around a week later, I made the same trip and believe it or not, the exact same thing happened again. This time I decided to try to make it by going South through Sublette. I ended up spending all day in my pickup before they finally opened the highway to Garden City. Again there were places where the drifts were 20 feet deep.
Global Warming.
