Wasn’t it they who also bragged that capitalism would sell them the rope with which they would hang it?

As a relative Johnny come lately to the Christian side of the Judeo-Christian party, I can now quite clearly see what has been taken advantage of. People WANT a generous world. They know somehow that this is their nature. But people have walked off from God in their prides (I’ve been no exception), and seek poor substitutes. It is like the way in which the prodigal son in the parable, longed to eat the pods which were the fodder of the swine he hired himself out to keep.

Again I was no exception. I went for Jimmy Carter, twice, whereas the verdict of the nation the second time around was “RONALD REAGAN AND WE’RE NOT KIDDING!” And I still didn’t stop... I went for Dukakis too! But that was before God grabbed me and showed me how much He cared. And I stopped expecting to see generosity initiatives out of politicians. I now knew it had to be private, from the heart.

I’ve been a little hard on Reagan still (actually been hard on regarding him as an idol), but for the most part he left room for the grace of the Lord rather than Carter’s man-centered pessimistic naysaying. I didn’t appreciate this until years and years later, in retrospect.

Somewhere in Hell, Nicky Kruscheve is caressing his shoe and chortling — “See, told you so. Vee bury you!”

Read Animal Farm - Orwell illustrated their nature quite accurately.
