[A] Trumpian four years would almost certainly involve a significant degradation of the unwritten restraints on presidential conduct, an acceleration of royalist tendencies that may be built into our system but still deserve to be slowed down, and a blurring of reality-TV and political culture that takes us several leagues further along the road to President Camacho. I donât think that the nebulous possibility of dealmaking should tempt liberals to welcome this kind of experiment; I donât think the hope of a more working-class-friendly G.O.P. should tempt conservative reformers to learn to love it either. And the fact that recent presidents have already pushed the envelope in all kinds of troubling ways is not a âwhatâs the big dealâ case for accepting Trumpism: Noting that George W. Bush approved waterboarding (while insisting that we donât torture) or that Barack Obama launched wars without congressional approval (while denying they were real wars) is not a case for electing a candidate whoâs gleeful in his promises to torture with abandon and rob other countries of their oil; rather, itâs a warning of what the office does to men who are restrained by norms and rules and the tribute that executive vice still has to pay to constitutional virtue.

“I started off liking his approach to his candidacy, but became troubled in his lack of explaining just how he was going to carry out his ideas.”
Posted like the typical Cruz-bot. I bet you are like the ones who call in the talk shows, and start out the same way: “I use to like Trump, but...”
Trump has put out official papers on how he will carry out his ideas. He, like the rest of the candidates, will direct voters to his published stuff.
How much explanation can a candidate squeeze into a one minute time slot in a debate?
Who is Ross Douthat and why should anyone give a damn?
Unafraid of being dubbed 'racist' or 'sexist' by the left wing media, Congress will find their stones, remember that thing about 'separation of powers', and have absolutely no problem putting Trump in short pants. Same goes with Bernie.
As mentioned upthread, the office of the presidency has already been so mightily degraded with trash like Bill Clinton, that I can’t exactly pretend it’s ever regained its former stature, nor is likely to. But I also can’t entirely shake Douthat’s contention, even if Trump follows through and manages some well-needed, positive directions (on illegals, trade, etc.), that he’s still going to be a kind of stepping-stone to a President Comacho and the dingbat, pop-culture dominated idiocy that the film portrayed.
Was that article even written in English? “[A] Trumpian four years...”
“[A] Trumpian four years would almost certainly involve a significant degradation of the unwritten restraints on presidential conduct”.
Do Y’a really think any degradation can be Lower, than after the Presidential Antics of William Clinton. Accused of Rape?
Inappropriate Sexual Activity on a continuing Basis, with a young Inteerns
Give Me A Break ??????
That little snippet does not the whole article read.
Unrestrained bully? Methinks he’s talking about Obama ... 8 years too late. This is war now with the libs ...
Someone should have told Ross back in his nursery days that “sticks and stones may break your bones, but names will never hurt you”. If he’s afraid of Trump’s demeanor and name calling, just wait until Trump manhandles Washington’s way of business.
Someone should have explained “sticks and stones can break your bones, but names can never hurt you” to Ross back in his nursery days. Wait until Trump “manhandles” Washington, Ross ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.
—”Trumpian four years would almost certainly involve a significant degradation of the unwritten restraints on presidential conduct”
And what about Barack Hussein’s conduct?
-Stirring up racial divisiveness at every opportunity he can.
-Inserting himself in the Trayvon case so that Zimmerman couldn’t get a fair trial “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.”
So unpresidential.
Well then vote for Hillary or Bernie.
Funny, I never heard Reagan call anyone ugly, stupid or a Pussy. And to Use Reagans name in relation to Trump is a insult to the greatest POTUS of the 20th century.
The LSM just keeps pushing out this crap even though they know that it just makes us hate them even more. They hope we will eventually grow weak and give in. But we won’t. Because we despise the LSM more than whatever we think about Trump. The desire to fully take out this old, diseased, dinosaur LSM is overwhelming!
Idiotic assertion in view of the last several presidents. I cannot see a single way in which he could be worse than Carter, Ford, Bush, Clintoon, George W, or Obama. Furthermore I cannot see that he would be worse than Romney, McCain, Kerry, AlGore, Dole, Perot, Dukakis, Mondale, etc.
I say give him a chance. If we don’t like him, boot him out in 4 years.

I give you ,,, Obama.
“and having 16 consecutive years of Presidents ignoring the Constitution “
As opposed to W and Clinton the strict constructionists? Please. We haven’t had a president that respects the constitution since Reagan. And he was an anomaly.
Because you are a p***y Ross. Enjoy your burka.
“I started off liking his approach to his candidacy, but became troubled in his lack of explaining just how he was going to carry out his ideas.”
Concern troll is very concerned. Screw explaining how. I think he has explained, but lets say he hasn’t. I’ll take the guy who has the right ideas over the others who don’t even care enough -to embrace- the ideas I want. And Trump has a history of having an idea and making it a reality on the ground. I can walk into a Trump skyscraper TODAY.
The others haven’t done doodly squat except blow hot air.
