I don't claim my tithe on my tax returns... In my mind I'm not giving my first fruits to God by doing that. I'm letting the government pay Him for me...

I would imagine this is likely the case with Senator Cruz as well

But he did claim some contributions, less than 1% for 4 years. Maybe you shouldn't equate the genuineness of your Christianity with Cruz's, though I think it speaks well of you that you do :)

According to personal tax returns released during his 2012 Senate bid, Senator Ted Cruz contributed less than 1% of his income to charity between 2006 and 2010...

Besides that’s wrong, this is the way the government lets you keep more of what you earned (in order to give it to some benevolent cause). To talk of it as if it was the government’s in the first place is exactly what the liberals want.

Tithe and other donations are different.

I would claim other donations as those are NOT part of my tithe.

If I’m donating to the Boy Scouts or some other organization, certainly would claim the deduction.

My tithe though: no way.
