Kasich came in second and could have just as easily run as a Democrat...
He did run as a Democrat. That is why he got so many votes!

Look at the Exit Polls. Kasich was propelled by moderate voters (though Trump still won all moderates). Kasich lost badly among "very conservative" voters to Cruz. But Trump dominated them both.
