I have wondered how political parties of other countries “map” to our own. I realize that the comparisons would be imperfect at best.

The FDP: Middle of U.S. Democratic Party

The CDU (and its Bavarian "sister" party, the CSU): Extreme left wing of the U.S. Democratic Party

The SPD: The far, extreme left wing of the U.S. Democratic Party

The Linke: The American Communist Party

The AfD and Pirate Party: Both comparable to the U.S. Libertarian Party
