It’s a ratio per 100,000 residents.

Chicago has a lot of gun crime, but a LOT of population.

I think compared to Detroit and St. Louis, Chicago has many more “pacified” neighborhoods.

Some time back I was looking at Chicago crime stats broken down by... district, I think, and one of the worst and one of the best were right beside each other (separated by the river). As a frequent visitor, I still haven't figured out the logic on why some are so much worse than others (there are general patterns like north to south, but also weird outliers)

Chicago's giving it the ol' college try this year, though. January murder rate that matches a spring month last year, Not Good.
