After Iowa, Will Republicans Finally get a Contest Without Trump?
Human Events ^ | Feb 8, 2016 | George Will

When Huck Finn asked Tom Sawyer what a Moslem is, Tom said a Moslem is someone who is not a Presbyterian, which is true, but not the whole truth. Donald Trump says he is a Presbyterian ("I drink my little wine . . . and have my little cracker"), which apparently was not good enough for enough of Iowa's evangelical Christians.

One person who left Iowa having earned the nation's gratitude is Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.). He campaigned with three Republican aspirants (Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Carly Fiorina) in order to advance this year's most urgent task, which is to elevate the Republican race by removing the Trump distraction.

I thought George was in frequent contact with Nancy Reagan. Is that where she got some of her own liberalism?

Wth even listens to or reads anything put out by Will?

Who is pushing now that Walker is toast?

I’ll take a wild guess and say Rubio.

Judging from his past, he won’t like Ted either. He was for Howard Baker when he ran against Reagan. My guess is that he would bash Cruz if Trump were to exit the race. I always thought of him as as an elitist with a side of pomposity.

I understand where you are coming from.

Any candidate claiming to have a plan for every knotty issue is fibbing or not creative.

I’m a developer like Trump (except tiny compared to him) and I understand his thought process. We brainstorm, throw all possibilities into the mix and make last minute decisions based on instinct and the best information available at the moment.

We don’t wear the blinders of ideology so we are free to think creatively. People who are slaves to ideology never have to make a decision, they just look at the template and plug it in.

I prefer the General Patton types.

I remember how much George Will tried to put Reagan down at every turn and Nancy brought George Will to Shepherdstown to have lunch and a chat with him at the Yellow Brick Bank, after that there was such a different tone about Reagan.

Maybe Melania needs to have lunch with George Will and adjust his attitude to Donald.

At least he’ll negotiate. At least he won’t cram it down everybody’s throat. The thing has to change but the question is what will it change into?

Serious question: Save for the entertainment, what is to like about Trump as a serious Presidential candidate for truly Conservative voters?

He's our best bet for closing the borders, which must be done to save America. And he can beat Hillary or Sanders. Cruz, who would probably close the borders as well, might not be able to beat either likely Democrat nominee.

I’ve been thinking of the Don as a Patton type. Specifically, his mouth. I was remembering the scene in Patton where Omar Bradley (Karl Malden) is reading him the riot act and he concludes with “George, (pause) you have a big mouth.” But also his aggressiveness, his combativeness, and his audacity.

Georgie likes to talk and write a lot about baseball too.   (Look at the pitching form all these guys have!   You wonder why they never made it to "the big leagues"!)

(It really is starting to look like George Will is entering late-state Alzheimer's or dementia, with some of the goofy nonsense he writes in his columns lately.)

“George Will is intelligent and knowledgeable. He was right about O’Riley’s Killing Reagan book. It was a terrible book. Many people who knew Reagan said so.

But George for some reason just hates Donald Trump.”

Oh No, two things I agree with Will about, He was right about not liking BOR’s book AND he doesn’t like Trump.

“He’s our best bet for closing the borders, which must be done to save America.”

this time next year, God willing, closing the borders will have started as well as uniting the hands of border patrol and law enforcement nationally to be able to enforce laws rather then what is happening now.

Well, we know who can fire a baseball up to the plate, but he’s retired. Obama can swish a sweet mid-range jumper tho.

From his "sweet spot" (like Jeb)?   (I bet George Will can swish a sweet one too.)

(By the way, in high school, Trump was good enough as a baseball player that he was scouted by at least two different Major League baseball teams, and he also played varsity high school football, and other sports as well, but he wanted to go to college and "make real money".)

The pragmatic approach to politics. Trump gives me 70% of what I want and he can score 270 electoral votes. Cruz gives me 90% of what I want, but I don't think he can get to 270. His voice and "lawyer-speak" turn off too many people (people say his Harvard law degree is an asset, but I think it's a liability). Clinton and Bernie give me 0% of what I want.

This a math problem that calculates expected value times probability of success. And there's also the entertainment value. Trump will hammer Hillary incessantly in a one-on-one match up - beat-downs I look forward to seeing.

President Trump and Chief Justice Cruz - how about that?
