Peterborough, New Hampshire (CNN)Ted Cruz told a New Hampshire audience Sunday that requiring women to sign up for the draft is "nuts," breaking with the views of several Republican presidential rivals.
Two days before the New Hampshire primary Cruz veered off his stump speech to blast his GOP competitors on the issue, which came up at the ABC debate Saturday. Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush and Chris Christie all said or suggested they'd support women being required to enroll in Selective Service and be eligible for the draft, since female service members can now serve in combat roles. Cruz was not asked.
"It was striking that three different people on that stage came out in support of drafting women into combat in the military," Cruz said. "I have to admit, as I was sitting there listening to that conversation, my reaction was: Are you guys nuts?"

I agree but you might have a pretty fierce fighting force if you draft them when they hit menopause.
Thank you Cruz. If the government tried to draft my wife or sister then they would have a whole new war on their hands.
Not all areas in the ME are marked as Combat Zones. Furthermore, look at the EU, that is significantly more dangerous now than the ME.
The purpose of a support role is to provide support to a combat role. That support doesn’t have to come with bodies on the ground in a Combat Zone.
Come on!? Nurses and Doctors in the military.
Infantry, no. I'd be comfortable with the idea of putting a good female pilot into an A-10.
Russia sent many women toward the front in WWII. They died from many health problems before reaching the front.
Pilots are different. While there is the risk of being shot down. They aren’t necessarily in the thick of a fight.
Understood. But it's still combat duty, and they proven they can be well capable of doing it, I think.
No, but support units are often left to provided security for themselves and such. The classic example is Jessica Lynch. A support unit with men and women, in Iraq, a place where no defined areas combat are expected. That is the way combat is.
Doc's, nurse and other highly trained specialties are usually protected or outside a combat theatre, but they are also in danger at times.
Yes and No. Air-to-Air combat is non-existent in today’s theater. Dropping ordinance from a plane, with exception to Close Air Support, is about the same as firing a missile at a target from a ship. They are performing combat operations but aren’t directly in the heat of combat.
Yes and that brings back my point that our military leaders were stupid for putting non-combat units within a combat zone.
“No way, no how should any mother or daughter of this great nation be required to register for the draft”
I agree. Men should protect their family, should protect women and children.
This new-fangled equality idea would be great-—if it were true. It’s not. Men are on average, tougher, more aggressive, better fighters than women. We are to guard the “weaker” sex against other men. That we even have to discuss this is such an indictment against the current generation of men.
Is it not terrific that as a society we are perfectly willing to send those mothers and daughters to do the dying that the boys of this generation will gladly hide behind?
With the males of today, it is honestly to discern gender. I had a high school male tell me that virtually all the boys claim to be homo as it is fashionable. And he thinks a lot act on those fashions.
They actually didn’t answer the question but made it into a women’s-rights question. They said women had the right to serve. Cruz is right on this but he didn’t say it last night. He waited until various right-wingers said wth?
According to a respected freeper with ties to the military, even these positions are ill-conceived. Women carrying stretchers, for instance, are not strong or fast enough for the job. Who was that famous one who couldn’t even clean her weapon properly and it jammed, yet she was this big hero?
My wife and I were watching last night when this was asked during the debate. My wife sets up displays all over honoring women who have served in the military. The first thing she said was that the questioners and none of the candidates have a clue about todays military.
Fewer than one in three young Americans are able to meet the minimum standards that the US military currently requires. 71% of young Americans currently would not be accepted into any branch of the services. The biggest problem is that most young Americans are not fit enough to qualify. Most are too fat. This is even more true for women than men.
The men and women who are currently able to qualify to join the military these days truly are the best of their generation. The question about whether women should be drafted is stupid. Today’s US Military does not want and doesn’t have a use for the vast majority of young American Women. Leftists women especially have a pretty high opinion of themselves, but the military doesn’t want them or have any use for the vast majority of them. People don’t get that.
They used to sometimes make criminals join the military, or even people with too many traffic tickets. Today the military won’t accept people like that. We work with young people in the military frequently, volunteering for the USO, working with the VA, and setting up historical displays. As I said they truly are the best of their generation. The draft is currently not a workable solution for staffing the military. The concept of drafting women is just some type of weird hypothetical, it only illustrates how little people know about today’s military.
Cruz is absolutely correct on this issue.
Sane people don’t give a crap about what liberals say on this or any other issue because you know whatever a liberal says is without common sense.
