"Good guys" finish last in warfare. How do you define torture? It depends what is at stake. If we captured a terrorist and knew that he had planted a nuclear weapon in NYC, should we do whatever is necessary to get him to disclose the location?
Plus you donât get anything from it because people will say anything to get the torture to stop.
I can't believe people still use that meme on torture. People do disclose information under torture and if they provide bad information then they could subject themselves to further torture. I have seen how it work in SERE training where people were broken in a controlled environment. If you are claustrophobic and put into a footlocker sized box, for example, you will be broken.
“Should any American soldier be so base and infamous as to injure any [prisoner]. . . I do most earnestly enjoin you to bring him to such severe and exemplary punishment as the enormity of the crime may require. Should it extend to death itself, it will not be disproportional to its guilt at such a time and in such a cause… for by such conduct they bring shame, disgrace and ruin to themselves and their country.” – George Washington, charge to the Northern Expeditionary Force, Sept. 14, 1775
