RAMZAN KADYROV has few inhibitions. Last week, just before the first anniversary of the murder of Boris Nemtsov, a liberal Russian opposition leader, by a member of Mr Kadyrovâs security services, the Chechen strongman posted a video on his Instagram page. It depicted Mikhail Kasyanov, a former prime minister, in the crosshairs of a sniper rifle. âKasyanov is in Strasbourg to get money for the opposition,â Mr Kadyrov commented under the video, in a clear warning to opposition politicians. âWhoever still doesnât get it, will.â
Mr Kadyrov has been ratcheting up the invective for a while. Last month he called liberals âvile jackalsâ who should be treated as âenemies of the peopleâ. In an article in the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia, Mr Kadyrov offered psychiatric treatment to opponents of President Vladimir Putin. He also staged a large rally in Grozny, Chechnyaâs capital, lest anyone doubt his popular support.
For many Russians, and not only opposition figures, Mr Kadyrovâs latest antics went too far. Ella Panfilova, a human-rights ombudsman in the Kremlin, said his statements should be examined for signs of âextremismâ. The Levada Centre, an independent pollster, found 60% of Russians thought Mr Kadyrovâs threats unacceptable. Konstantin Senchenko, an independent politician from Krasnoyarsk, called Mr Kadyrov âa disgrace to Russiaâ on his Facebook page. The next day, after threatening calls from Chechnya, Mr Senchenko was forced to apologise profusely.
A state within a state loyal to a person and not the state and all loyal to Putin. The rule of law is replaced with authoritarianism, corruption, and Putinism.
How is that different than what we have in the Obama administration?
The government would protect him at all legal, moral and ethical costs. Ditto the cabinet and ex-cabinet members.
We’ll see what happens with an FBI referral on Cankles for us to see just how far we’ve sunk as a Republic into despotism. Her Thighness won’t see the inside of a court, let alone a jail cell.
There are other actions you can take, but why bother for The Economissed?
Sort of like the hordes of 0bamunists here.
Russia always has and always will have a strong leader - that’s just the way it is. Russia will never have a leader like anyone in the west - it just will not. Get over it and move on.
Putin is certainly much better than the Russian leaders of the past - like the mass murderers Stalin or Khrushchev.
For those history buffs in the audience, I believe that Kadyrov is the same persona as Ernst Röhm was for Adloph Hitler: Ruthless murdering assassin with total loyalty to der Führer. You will be hearing a lot from this ‘person’ in the near future. He also is suspected of being the muscle behind the Nemtsov Murder last year in Red Square.
True, but he’s not a queer. Putin, like Hitler, may have to come to grips with Kadyrov the way Hitler had to get rid of Roehm.
I don’t understand your comment. Is it purposely cryptic?
The trade off in Russia in accepting the myth that they must always have a strongman un-encombered by law is becoming quite apparent for the Russian people with their country being run into ground while Putin and his cronies continue to swindle them out of their wealth. There will be a reckoning, and no fan of authoritarian statism anywhere will be able to save Putin.
It used to be only the Left in the USA exaggerated our evils with such over-the-top nonsense. Now, there are “conservatives” given to the same hyperbole.
Putin didn’t not hijack anything people at the time were calling for even more draconian leaders. Putin was a moderate choice. You are into spreading US values where it will not flourish - let Russia be Russia.
Russia has to come there on its own, not because some twat in the US demands they comply with his personal political views.
If Putin falls and some ‘moderate’ Mr Nice-Guy takes his place he will shortly have an ‘accident.’ To be replaced with who-knows-who.
Impuning that I favor some form of government for Russia is one more ad hominem - I was just reporting how it is, having spent many years involved with all things Russian.
You may not like Russia, things Russia, or Putin - but the Russian people love him - he’s the best leader they have had since the Fall. Gainsay this and it will show how little you know of the Russian culture and its people.
When was the last time you were in Russia? I think you’re engaging in projection, especially on the twat subject.
So one post isn’t enough to hold all those links?
So you cannot spell “impugn” Mr. Know it all.
Oh that smarts!
Well, it’s been a long time since you were anywhere near Russia, and it shows in your stereotypical commentary. Have a nice day, old fella.
OK what ever you say - you must know, I guess, so we bow to your innate sagacity and fervent belief in something that does not exist except in the media you read or misread, as the case may be.
