Thousands flee as Russian-backed offensive threatens to besiege Aleppo

BEIRUT | By John Davison

Tens of thousands of Syrians fled an intensifying Russian assault around Aleppo on Friday, and aid workers said they feared the city which once held two million people could soon fall under a full government siege.

Video footage showed thousands of people, mostly women, children and the elderly, massing at the Bab al-Salam border crossing. Men carried luggage on top of their heads, and the elderly and those unable to walk were brought in wheelchairs. Some women sat on the side of the road holding babies and awaited to be allowed into Turkey.

The leader of a prominent rebel group active in northwestern Syria confirmed that government-allied forces were tightening their grip on the northern Aleppo countryside, and that heavy Russian bombing carried on unabated.

NON-STOP RUSSIAN AIR STRIKES

"The Russian (air) cover continues night and day, there were more than 250 air strikes on this area in one day," Hassan Haj Ali, head of Liwa Suqour al-Jabal, a group that fights under the umbrella of the Free Syrian Army, told Reuters.

The Russians are ignoring ISIS to attack genuine freedom fighters trying to oust a Baathist NAZI dictator who CREATED ISIS.

It is unlikely a Muslim heretic like the Alawite Assad would create a fundmental Sunni group like ISIS who would then target him, and his protected Kafir Christians that he has been protecting. - Tom

The McCain types push that line to make people (they hope) sympathetic to ousting Assad. I have seen a few posters on here openly deny Assad’s regime protected the native religious minorities. The Ba’athists are secular dictators who view the Muslim brotherhood as their enemy - same as in Egypt.

IT may be Russian air power but it is Shiite (Iran) boots on the ground advancing. The kenyan is surrendering the ME to Iran. This won’t end well for anybody, IMO.

It doesn’t matter. ONce we pulled out of Iraq left vaccums in Egypt, there is no go option, and if you think putting US force on the ground is good option...you’re wrong.

This is the absolute worst presidency of all times. Hillary Clinton was part of this.

There’s nothing we can do except watch, but these are Muslims fighting muslims..right?
