No, I'm making the argument that Cruz is just another political hack. Both he and Rubio participated in this and it's beyond shameful.
Put Trump aside for a moment, Cruz & Rubio didn't give Carson a thought before they pulled this. Carson was looking forward to caucus, kept saying he'd do well. That opportunity, to do well and get that bump is gone. The one caucus where Mrs. Carson walked in to find her husband was supposedly out of the race went big for Carson when they learned he was still in.
Thanks to a couple of junior senators and their political ambitions, we'll never know.

That’s what it’s looking like to me too. I am really sad about this. I voted for Ted, he sure didn’t run like this when it was his senate run. Looks like he has sold out. So much for being a different type of politician.
You are being way too hard on them.
I have a philosophy called “friend or foe?” if has served me well in my career. It works like this:
Friend: my smallest successes are proof to you that I am a good and smart person to you. My failures only prove to you that I am a fla2ed person. A work in progress.
Foe: my slightest error is pounced upon as proof that I’m stupid, lazy, evil or all three. My greatest accomplishments are ridiculed as lucky or a stopped clock being right twice a day.
Cruz has a lot of foes on FR. Clearly you are one of them.
This time line and context clarifies how little there is to this, though to his foes it is proof, once again of his utter depravity. But opinions vary. :-)
If Carson really believed he was going to do so well in the Iowa caucuses why was he leaving early and taking at least the next three days off from campaigning at such a critical part of the race?
No serious candidate takes three days off right before the New Hampshire primary just to get a change of clothes.
Looks like a guy planning to drop out.
