In the old days, when a ship docked at a port, rats would climb up the hawsers and secrete themselves aboard, where they would wreak havoc among the ship's stores and cargo, spread disease, and contaminate everything they touched with their feces and urine.

I doubt the sailors considered them part of the crew.
