Presidential candidates talk about laws as if they can initiate legislation. It’s a shell game designed to blow smoke up a constituency’s rear. Trump is the end of all that.

This is getting weirder and weirder....

So all that stuff Reagan promised in 1980 about tax cuts, and increasing military spending, and passing laws to make it easier for businesses, was all stuff we should have ignored because he couldn't technically initiate that legislation himself? That's nuts. The President comes up with the framework, and then allies in Congress introduce it.

And by the way, to the extent you expect Trump to do things like build a wall, and increase tariffs on China by 45%, etc., that also requires legislation that he is unable to initiate. But you apparently have no problem applauding him for making those legislative proposals. You only retreat behind "he can't initiate legislation" when it's something that is more controversial here.

The only reason Trump is ducking out on specifics is that he doesn't want to alienate voters. He wants to remain all things to all people by speaking in generalities for as long as he can. Or at least until he wins the nomination.
