The seemingly endless presidential campaign finally gets real Monday, with Iowa voters heading to the polls for the state's caucuses.
The candidates blitzed the Hawkeye State in a final push Sunday, making public demonstrations of their faith and getting in their last jabs.
Both the Republican and Democratic races are considered up for grabs, with the winners certain to get a burst of momentum.
In a show of solidarity with the evangelical Christians who dominate the GOP caucuses, Donald Trump began the day at a nondenominational church in Council Bluffs with his wife, Melania.
Melania Trump took Communion from a silver tray, but Trump thought it was a collection plate and reached into his pocket to donate before realizing his mistake.
"I thought it was for offering," he said later with a laugh.

OH Close the blind, the SUN, the SUN!!!
No problemo for Trump...all he needs to do to get back on top is promise again to have Oprah Winfrey as his v.p. (oh, my bad, I forgot that he was only “joking” when he about that).
;-)
When real Christians find someone in their midst who appears to be lost, they try to reach that soul with the Gospel.
At least, that was the way it was back in the day. New theories rooted in earthly power and prosperity may have made that stuff about angels rejoicing for the redeemed obsolete and embarrassing.
I wonder if Trump could manage to say grace with fewer than four takes?
He wasn't at an Orthodox service...
It was the 80's and I was about to leave for boot camp. My godmother asked me to go to her church once to pray with her. She considered herself quite religious and I knew it would make her happy so I agreed.
She came to pick me up at 6AM or so, I figured that was fine because we would get it out of the way early.
Turned out that that was just the church breakfast. The breakfast ended in a whole lot of "praising" and a collection.
Things seemed relatively normal when we entered the church. I knew she went to a "nondenominational" church but certainly wasn't expecting the weirdness of the Charismatic doomsday cult I was about to be exposed to.
Over the course of several hours there were electric guitars pealing and people dropping to the ground and "sizzling", a whole lot of "tongues" mumbling, the "true believers" being knocked off their feet by beams of cosmic cleansing being whipped about by their Holy man knocking "bedwetting demons" out of members of the congregation, etc. This process included 4 or 5 more collections. "I know you've already given but the Lord wants you to dig deep to see his work carried through." I saw rings and things being thrown into that last loot bag that was passed through. Toward the end the Holy man cast a protection spell "prayed" for me, I think that cost her extra.
Finally, well into the afternoon, the service was over. I could go home...
Nope. Now comes the pot luck supper. After great amounts of tater tot casserole was slung about there was a great deal more of unusual "praising" and of course another collection.
Oh, and by the way, there was no Communion.
The point being, that while the services I have attended and those services Ive gone to at friends churches have generally proceeded as you describe, there is no good way of knowing in advance what happens and what the proceedings are when one enters some "churches".
I can imagine something like, “All they had were these little crackers they were giving out - and talk about cheap! - only one cracker per person. I would fire the caterer. so I asked them to put some in a doggie bag so I could have a snack later.”
“THIS is cringeworthy........”
YAY-yussss-UH! It ISSSSsssssssssssssss-uh! Dew ah have a AYE-MENNN?!?!?
As a former Lutheran, with many “low-church” protestant friends, I am quite familiar with the kind of event you described.
The Trumps should visit an Orthodox Church some time. It probably would not help them in the Iowa caucuses, however.
While i agree if someone paying attention it is impossible to confuse the 2. However how many of us have never been distracted in church, with our mind elsewhere. I know i have, and im not running for potus. It was embarrassing for him personally, but not newsworthy IMHO. Let the shots come my way now.
“Just a Southern mountains country guy’s idea of a humorous FR post. Seemed appropriate response but flew over your head. My bad. Going back to sleep now. And thanks for your kind religious retort.”
Us low church peckerwoods just ain’t welcome some places.
Communion is not to be taken lightly. The pastor should have explained EXACTLY who should, and should not, be partaking. I suspect the pastor did not do this or Trump would not have made this mistake. (If in fact he did).
Would love to see how this board would react if Obama did the same thing.
Thank you for the timely reality check.
:-)
So what is a “non-denominational” church anyway? Is that like the “Church of What’s Happening Now”.?

You see that a lot in blue states, more of that Unitarian, New Age type stuff.
In conservative areas, it is typically going to be an independent, low church congregation with varied notions about grace, gifts, an more or less Calvinism.
Usually.
Go watch The Apostle if you are genuinely interested. Good people, if rough and ‘ignernt’. I’m not worthy to darken the doors of those kinds of congregations anymore, but if I could find one amongst all the contemporary plastic, I surely would. Scoffers mock at their own peril.
“Cruz is a lifelong born again Christian”
*cough*
No such thing.
Let me see if I’ve got this right.
A man goes to a church he’s not familiar with. A man who claims to believe in the Jewish Messiah(yes, Jesus was Jewish and was promised to the Jews) but who isn’t religious.
This same man has been running back and forth across the nation doing back to back rallys, sometimes two in one day, whose had very little to NO sleep over the entire weekend, and the first mistake he makes in a RELIGIOUS environment...I have heard it said that xianity isn’t a religion, its a relationship...
The first mistake this exhausted man makes is an act of charity in a religious environment and he is MOCKED, verbally insulted, called a fake xian by the ‘religious’???!
The man wasn’t thinking of taking, but of giving...and he isn’t xian enough?
WOW.
What a wittness the religious have bestowed upon us.
Yes, ma’am, I think you summarize the scandal very well.
Notice who eats this stuff up. Some of them so loathe The Donald that they have lost a spirit of agape so that they may freely ridicule. Others are using the religious nature of real conservatives to dividie and blunt the wave of revulsion we have toward the socialist fascists in power. These stories are posted to manipulate.
