I wonder if it was just an age thing, like did they only send them to old people and figured if old people who normally didn’t vote actually voted they would vote for Cruz or what? How did they think upping turnout generally would help Cruz and not Trump like everyone says?

If you read the article you will see they sent them to people who were too young to fit Cruz’s profile of previous voting.

In the article professor indicates they were all ages — the younger ones would have been ineligible to vote in all the elections they are ‘violated’ for. I wonder if this could open up libel suits from the slandered parties having false information published about them.

Any campaign that has a chance of being successful is micro targeting - finding identifiable pockets of the registered voting population and targeting them with different communications which are particularly effective in activating that segment to turn out and vote. The Cruz campaign is sophisticated enough that they wouldn't be sending the same communication to all voters above a particular age. Probably segmented by age and propensity to vote Cruz (defined by a predictive score) and propensity to participate in the caucus (defined by a different predictive score). There may be further segmentations (hence micro targeting.)

I'm inclined to think that the bellowing about this particular mailing is being propagated by folks that are opposed to Cruz. Obama for America 2012 used the same method and I don't recall any particular reaction to it - other than a post by Prof. Ann Althouse on her blog after she received one that year.

I don't think they are making a mistake with this, and I think there is a good chance that Cruz wins and stays alive to fight in primaries down the road. We'll know soon.
