My understanding is that Cruz was born on Canadian soil and his mother was a US citizen but not his father.

The way I was taught in school...back in the days when they actually taught this stuff...is that, to be an NBC, you had to be born on US soil (or US entity), of two US citizen parents. That seems to disqualify Cruz.

Rubio, I understand, was born on US soil but his parents were not US citizens at the time. Seems like that would be a disqualification too yet, not much is being said about it.

Obviously, based on the way I was taught, Obama should not have been eligible either. I don't recall a big firestorm over that. So now, a precedent has been set but is it constitutional?

Good question. It needs to be resolved. Obama set a precedent and now that is being stretched even further. Cruz would be the first President born abroad to only one Amcit and be a citizen by birth of another country, which he recently denounced.

FWIW not every Amcit mother can transmit even regular US citizenship to a child born abroad. There are conditions that circumscribe derivative citizenship.
