Donald Trump counter-programmed Thursday's GOP primary debate on Fox with his own prime time event. So whose show scored a bigger audience?
Answer: Fox's debate. But it was the second lowest rated debate of the season. So Trump is certain to take credit for hurting the channel's total viewership.
Fox News Channel's Trump-less debate had an 8.4 household rating, according to early Nielsen data from so-called metered markets.
This means 8.4% of American metered market homes with TV sets were watching the face-off.
By comparison, two of the cable channels that showed parts of Trump's event, CNN and MSNBC, had about a quarter of Fox's audience combined.
So Trump's rivals clearly came out ahead in the raw ratings.
The most recent GOP debate, televised two weeks ago on the harder-to-find Fox Business Network, had a household rating of 7.4.
So Thursday's debate was bigger -- but not by much. The other five GOP debates of the cycle have had household ratings ranging from 8.9 to 15.9.

From the phone Calls after the show,Trump evidently is picking up many cross over votes. The show was beautiful and very well done with the emphasis on the vets straight through. Huckabee and Santorum added a bit of their humor and support, a really nice touch. I simply enjoyed the entire show and wished it had been longer than an hour. Others felt the same.
I watched the whole thing from beginning to end on OAN (Trump Vet Rally)
Oh I hope he does. It was a pleasant change.. But that is coming from a Cruz supporter, so I am obviously biased.
So let me see if I have this right. This debate drew more viewers without Trump than the previous debate did with Trump.
Odd being that debates over time tend to lose viewers. This one gained viewers even with a sideshow funneling viewers away on 3 other networks.
Well, not exactly. Several channels carried parts of the rally, but c-span carried it in it’s entirety, and c-span isn’t listed.
I watched Trump’s Wounded Warriors event live on YouTube, no interruptions.
C-span isn’t listed, and c-span aired the rally in it’s entirety, where the others did not. We watched it on c-span ourselves. Also, considering that it was arranged in under 24 hours, the numbers were very impressive. If any of the other candidates tried a similar move I wonder how their numbers would shaken out.
But still more that the last debate which INCLUDED Trump. Mathematical logic would seem to suggest that Trump’s absence increased viewership.
I recorded Trump and watched Fox live to see Cruz see what life is like without Trump deflecting away.
It was a spectacle created by Trump and people got to see Cruz diminished.
Nearly every analyst is declaring Cruz the loser.
Iron Man or Mrs. Peel?
Iron Man. I’d rather do dinner with Peel though.
>>Very small % of people under 30 ever sit through any TV ads.<<
And for the over-60 crowd, we call them bathroom breaks. I’m old enough to remember when it was one minute of commercials every 15 minutes. Now it looks like a 50/50 split on many shows....even the news shows run 4-5 minutes of commercials at a clip...enough for the bathroom, grabbing another beverage, some chips, check the email, then back at it.
If I were in charge of doling out ad dollars, most of it would go to product placement within the shows themselves, when people are actually watching, well, and facebooking...
There’s an old saying in show biz....Always leave them wanting more................. Guess that’s about it. OToH musn’t forget the entire show was put together in under 24 hours from site choice to the last word. An enormous feat!
“Not all vets are intelligent. Anyone who claims that all vets are intelligent has obviously never served in the military.”
Keep digging, keep digging. Your hole is not quite deep enough yet...

And he is out rallying again tomorrow.
Trump’s next Billion should be made by taking over OANN and propelling it to the #1 news agency in the US.
Haven’t read the thread comments yet, but think about it, this “2ND LOWEST rating of the debate season”, means that it must have included the undercard debates also that swaths of people did not watch, either thinking they were duds, or they were too early in the evening for big prime time viewing.
This has to mean the FOX DEBATE of last night was really bad numbers.
As for MeAgain Kelly, she is clearly a Lefty, and is deadly with her videos of recent months showing the duplicity of candidates, who have not enough response time to properly defend themselves.
With TRUMP, many of those deadly videos Megyn would use against him are close to two decades old, and besides, TRUMP does not dodge. He pleads, “Guilty, as charged!” and then goes on to explain when and how he changed, a change which happened LONG before he wanted to run for president.
*lobbylu does not get the picture. (David Brock in drag.)
TRUMP won the night on CNN, CSPAN, MNBC, even FOX!
TRUMP was everywhere!
With CNN and MNBC alone, taking 25% of FOX viewers to boot. CSpan viewers has not been rated on top of that!
WIPE OUT! Trump was head to knees above the field on exposure to IOWANS, and nationally.
The man is.... a GENIUS.
