The headline on the McConnell story was misleading. He never claimed to see Finicum get shot. He said he saw Finicum stop...then pull away. Then he started recounting somebody else’s story about what happened at the roadblock.
On the waisteband thing...I’ve already taken note of that. Finicum was photographed (taking a camera off a pole) with a large pistol in a holster.
I was refering to the oregon live story that was early on here at FR, and they quote him as saying that.

I have since went and listen to his account and you are correct he said Payne and Cox told him that.
