Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said late Tuesday that Donald Trump's fear of defending his record is behind the GOP front-runner's boycott of the next Fox News GOP presidential debate.
"The reality is, the reason Donald is doing this â I actually don't think it's because of [Fox News host] Megyn [Kelly] at all," he said on Fox News's "Hannity."
"I think it's because he's afraid to defend his record, that he knows he can't defend his record, and he's trying to hide from the voters of Iowa," Cruz said six days from the first voting state's caucuses next Monday.
"He's not willing to stand up and explain why he supports Bernie Sanders-style, full-on socialized medicine, expanding ObamaCare so the federal government is in charge of our healthcare," he said, tying Trump with the Democratic presidential contender.
"He can't explain why today he supports taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood," Cruz added.
"He can't explain why he supported Obama's stimulus plan and supported Obama's TARP bail-out of the big banks. He doesn't want to answer those questions, and he refuses to show up."
Cruz argued that Trump's claims of bias from Kelly reveal he is not capable of confronting more powerful public figures.
"If you're afraid of Megyn Kelly, then you're going to be afraid of Hillary Clinton and you're going to be afraid of Vladimir Putin," he said.
"If you're afraid to have anyone ask a question, that does not bode well for what kind of commander in chief you'd make," the Texas lawmaker added.
Trump announced late Tuesday that he is skipping the seventh GOP presidential debate in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday evening.
Kelly and Trump have publicly sparred since the first debate last August. The outspoken billionaire disliked her questions about his past remarks toward women.
I like Trump - he is my second choice after Cruz, but I've gotta tell you he's turning me off with his criticism of Cruz for not giving into the Washington DC GOP Establishment/democrats.
If Trump starts implying that Cruz is "too conservative" Trump WILL lose me 100% and I think we're getting close.
Problem is, most Trump supporters are anti-Republican establishment, Tea Party, anti-PC, pro-constitution voters who also like Ted Cruz very much and MANY of them would prefer Ted Cruz over Trump but are seeing the possibility that Trump just may have a better chance of winning. If Trump criticizes Ted Cruz over the above mentioned issues, he will likely lose a lot of support.
So you actually want to argue like a liberal and claim that “Cruz actually VOTED to take food from the mouths of Americans and rip clothes from their backs”? Really?
Not even close, and you know that.
Not even close, and you know that.
***
Oh really? Then tell me, what do illegal immigrants do? Oh right, take jobs from people, rape and murder, and of course, vote for liberals to subvert our electoral process in order to choke out conservatism.
You didn’t know them. You didn’t seem them bleed. But the pain was real, and your so-called hero made all those votes to let more and more of those illegals in to cause more and more harm. So yes, he took food out of the mouths of Americans and tore clothes off their back because of those votes and because of his support.
And for what? For WHAT?!
You can’t answer with anything more than trying to call me a liar, when you have shown your own intellectual bankruptcy by slamming one candidate for only talking about other liberal causes in the past, while supporting a candidate who claimed to be conservative and then actually WORKED TO SUPPORT the most dangerous liberal cause of the decade.
And YOU know that.
Senator Cruz was the one who led the fight to stop the Gang of Eight. He and Senator Sessions are currently sponsoring a bill to reduce H-1B visas.
Meanwhile, Donald Duck supports touchback amnesty, and you think he’s the greatest thing since canned peaches.
Uh-huh. So in addition to voting for amnesty when it mattered, he’s then introducing a bill against it when it’s not going to pass. So Cruz is a flip-flopper on top of everything else too.
And this so-called touchback amnesty is nothing more than one interpretation of what Trump said, in YOUR fevered imaginations, the one chosen to make him look bad, whereas your candidate’s ACTUAL VOTES IN FAVOR are ignored.
And even if the worst interpretation of Trump’s remarks is true is true, Cruz’s inability to even use the word ‘deport’ STILL makes Donald’s plan better, because at least the ones ‘let back in’ will be registered as aliens, whereas Cruz is just going to let them stay.
On top of that Cruz has used ALL the language of the amnesty-loving elitists who are lying to us rubes. Conversation? Secure the border first? Yeah, I remember being told that way back when, after which they turned around and did the opposite. And Cruz saying so suggests that he is amazingly out of touch with we who have been lied to, or an outright liar himself.
Cruz has shown conclusively that he is an utter flake on illegals, and no matter how many times you throw a tantrum on FR, it’s not gonna change it.
Correction: In addition to supporting Amnesty when it mattered, et cetera, et cetera.
Not that it makes much of a difference.
Agreed. I thought Ted's response was great and were legitimate and effective jabs at Trump until he got to the Trump is afraid meme. Ironic since Cruz' breakout moment this election cycle was at the CNBC debate where he berated the "moderators" for their biased, attack dog "gotcha" questions. Trump is just responding to the same thing but in a grander style.
The truth is, it does make me think Trump is afraid to hold this debate because his numbers are too shaky....... especially since his followers on Twitter VOTED 56% to 44% for him to GO TO THE DEBATE (per Trump's posting)
If Trump was the only one that had gotten crappy, nasty comments from the moderators, I might feel differently. But the fact is, the moderators crapped on all the candidates to some degree but I don't see the others whining about taking their toys and going home because the other kids aren't playing fair. And as you mentioned, Cruz took the fight to the moderator's right there at CNBC and got applause. Trump could do the same thing this time and get a lot of praise.....and maybe more votes.
Oh please Ted. Very disappointed in you.
Agree! It’s not a stage for moderators to try and ‘shine’ with unimportant gotcha questions or insinuations. The candidates should debate each other.
One of the reason I like Cruz is he stands up to the corrupt conservative elites... So yeah, that one kind of bothers me too... On the other hand that trait of Cruz’s would work better on the Supreme Court than as President...
Great post! Too bad that Cruz fans just cannot face this truth about him.
Touchback amnesty provided that illegals had to “touch back” in their country of origin, then they would be eligible to apply for readmission.
Trump’s plan, OTOH, provides that they must go home to their old country and then they’ll be eligible to apply for readmission.
Yep, completely different.
Cruz voted against the amnesty bill when he had the chance. Donald Duck favors letting illegals back in — which is amnesty, no matter how nicely you dress it up.
Look, you can just keep crying all you want, but you’re really not worth my time any more. You keep saying the same things, I keep rejecting the same things, you keep saying that I’m lying, blah blah blah...
