Cruz: Trump afraid to defend his record
The Hill ^ | January 27, 2016, 07:52 am | Mark Hensch

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said late Tuesday that Donald Trump's fear of defending his record is behind the GOP front-runner's boycott of the next Fox News GOP presidential debate.

"The reality is, the reason Donald is doing this — I actually don't think it's because of [Fox News host] Megyn [Kelly] at all," he said on Fox News's "Hannity."

"I think it's because he's afraid to defend his record, that he knows he can't defend his record, and he's trying to hide from the voters of Iowa," Cruz said six days from the first voting state's caucuses next Monday.

"He's not willing to stand up and explain why he supports Bernie Sanders-style, full-on socialized medicine, expanding ObamaCare so the federal government is in charge of our healthcare," he said, tying Trump with the Democratic presidential contender.

"He can't explain why today he supports taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood," Cruz added.

"He can't explain why he supported Obama's stimulus plan and supported Obama's TARP bail-out of the big banks. He doesn't want to answer those questions, and he refuses to show up."

Cruz argued that Trump's claims of bias from Kelly reveal he is not capable of confronting more powerful public figures.

"If you're afraid of Megyn Kelly, then you're going to be afraid of Hillary Clinton and you're going to be afraid of Vladimir Putin," he said.

"If you're afraid to have anyone ask a question, that does not bode well for what kind of commander in chief you'd make," the Texas lawmaker added.

Trump announced late Tuesday that he is skipping the seventh GOP presidential debate in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday evening.

Kelly and Trump have publicly sparred since the first debate last August. The outspoken billionaire disliked her questions about his past remarks toward women.

I still like Cruz... he’s the kind of man we need on the Supreme Court. He’s not going to ‘grow’ into a liberal and he’s tough enough to stand with his values.

Good points. These politicians are all owned by mexico and China. This is why only Trump speaks out against Mexico and China.

Please. Trump just knows how to manipulate shallow people like he did on a weekly basis on his “reality” tv show. This temporarily allows him to dodge the issues, which as a lifelong leftist and corporate crony, he knows he will get skewered on if he ever truly has to face the music.

The NewYawk Value Man is scared of a Lil Ol Girl and the questions she may ask

Pitiful. Shameful. Beautiful

I want a President that will stand-up to the wolves that are at my front door.

I want a President that will talk in full sentences and explain to me why he is a Conservative and does not support Obamacare, abortion and the Democratic Party.

I want Ted Cruz for President and that why I donate $100.00 a month to his VICTORY FUND

I would like to see that too.

Cruz would take Trump to the cleaners because Trump cannot form a complete sentence without his advisers writing the script.

It would be beautiful.

If Der Trumpenfuhrer can’t handle Megan Whatshername, how’s he going to handle the body of Piranhas in the Whitehut Press Corpse?

The way he has handled everyone in the past. Pay them off.

I disagree with Cruz here. Both Trump and his supporters have shown that his record is irrelevant to him.

This is another attention getting ploy of his, nothing more. I wouldn’t be surprised if right before the debate he declares he will show up after all, just to get more free media coverage. Hell I wouldn’t put it past FNC to be in on it and remove Kelly at the last moment to set it up for him.

history would repeat.

Al Gore was the best debater in 2004. W had no chance.

We saw how “mr expert debater” fared. He won the debate and lost the election.

It’s actually very smart of Cruz. Trump would do the exact same thing. This is a big loser for Trump. Cruz will be able to lay out Trump’s positions on all the issues and Trump won’t be there to defend himself. On the other hand, Trump has no defense to the charges, so maybe he thought it was better to simply avoid addressing the charges.

Trumps been buying and paying off plenty behind the scenes....just because he doesn't have any Pacs does not mean he doesn't have plenty of PACKS out there spreading his wealth where he can affect the election...this is a guy that works dirty behind the scenes....that has not changed.

All those Trump syncophants will not be able to tear themselves away from the screen. Want proof of that? Just wait to read FR during and after the debate. They won’t be able to help themselves.

Except that Cruz was very eloquent and defended all the other candidates, and not just himself.

Everything Cruz has said about Trump is objectively true based on Trumps own words. How is that lying?
