Gov. Terry Branstad (R-Iowa) said in an interview released Tuesday that Donald Trump is changing the way presidential candidates seek the White House.
"We've never had anybody with quite the character of Donald Trump," he said on USA Today's "Capital Download."
"He has certainly rewritten the rulebook," Branstad told host Susan Page. "He has tremendous media presence. I think itâs a tribute to the interest people have in restoring America's greatness. They are very unhappy with the way things are going in Washington, D.C."
Branstad argued that the surge of Iowans supporting Trump recalls the rise of then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill) in his state in 2008.
"The turnout [Trump] gets at his events are beyond anything weâve ever seen before, I guess, except for Barack Obama eight years ago on the Democratic side," he said.
"[Trump is] tapping into a lot of concern and a lot of people who feel the establishment has failed the country and we need new leadership," Branstad continued about the GOP presidential front-runner.
"I think the bigger turnout the better it is for him," he added of Trump's chances in Monday's Iowa caucuses. "I think it's going to exceed any turnout we've had before."
Branstad added that everyday Americans are not surprised by Trump's bombastic rhetoric given the billionaire's entertainment background.
"It's hard to be shocked by anything he says," he said, addressing Trump's recent remarks that he could shoot a random bystander and not lose voter support.
"People are so sick and tired of political correctness that they kind of accept Donald Trump as somebody who tells it like it is. They know there's a certain amount of hyperbole in everything he says."
Trump is locked in a fierce battle with Ted Cruz heading toward Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses on Feb. 1.
About 6 points separates the two rivals there, with Trump edging past Cruz in the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls.
He's a coward and a bully, and Fox just proved it by punching him in the nose; Trump showed it by taking his things and crying all the way home.
And even if I accept the premise that he's a "fighter," the main "failing" he has is that he's not on our side.
If it's 140,000 or more Trump wins handily.

Happy, happy. It is critical that Trump be wiped out as soon as possible since he will be the most difficult for the Commies to beat. They will annihilate Cruz for sure and probably Rubio but Trump has them totally flummoxed.
Personally, I hate to see the Right turn to the quadrennial circular firing squad and get led by the nose ONCE AGAIN to destroying themselves. ANY Republican is preferable to any candidate the Commies come up with.
There is no reason that a true patriot should express such virulent hatred of any of these candidates such as I am seeing around here. It is as though the Haters have not learned a thing from the last eight years. They make cannibals look civilized.
Don’t be an idiot. What was planned for Trump was even admitted by Kelly. After the Dog and Pony show she gleefully discussed the two sets of questions that were prepared. One was WITH DT the other without.
Now it should be obvious to even the most dense that a “debate” should ask questions which apply to EVERYONE there. While the others stood in fear toward the Treason Media, Trump tells them to stick it. He does not need them, they need him.
THAT is the fighter I support and to pretend that Kelly was the point is positing a knowing falsehood. Anyone with a brain knew the issue was media bias and duplicity represented by the lightweight “gotcha” artist, not the lightweight “gotcha” artist.
FR is a perfect example of how easy it is to Divide and Conquer and cause people who should be allies to turn on each other like sharks in a feeding frenzy. It happens every four years and generally produces a Loser easily beaten by the Party of Treason.
While supporting Trump, I hate to see this yet again. ANY Republican running is better than Mrs. Cosby and her traitorous band of lunatics. These candidates should stop firing on each other and concentrate all attacks on the Party of Treason and the loathsome Clinton Crime family.
VoteTrump.
MY “side” is a candidate who is a Nationalist and a Patriot not someone espousing a version of “conservatism” guaranteed to lose yet again.
You have every right to argue with the trivialities used by the Democrats but don’t expect that to fly with anyone with a functioning brain.
Professor Schweikart has convincingly demonstrated in his brilliant book “7 Events Which Made America, America” the superior capabilities of Private Initiative to Big Government failure to solve problems.
Rather than “crying all the way home”, IN FACT he a matter of a day organized and event which raising 7 or 8 Million for the vets. While the others TALKED about getting more resources for them, Trump actually DID something. The only word for this is REMARKABLE.
I know libs love to call their enemies bullies but when ONE man takes on the ENTIRE media, calling HIM the “bully” is utterly absurd.
I realize I’m an idiot, but I believe you replied to the wrong post.
Cruz wins Iowa, Trump 1201 votes away from finishing third.
Lets see if Cruz can pull the same trick in NH. ...4 days and a wake up.
I responded to 15. If that was not your comment I apologize.
BTW my comment was a demonstration of love in that I asked you not to BE an idiot, not that you WERE one.
Trump will blow out NH and likely SC. I think he has a big lead in NV too. He needs to get those three because the establishment is going to start throwing money at Rubio soon as he is their only hope. Rubio could be a big problem as the others drop out. The polls will naturally tigbten with less people.
Oh, what a nice reply, thank you! And you were right, that was my comment, so the jury is probably coming back with a verdict of idiot!
