There once was a physicist named Hawking
To whose ideas, conservatives are balking
He's way out in left field
Where his views are revealed
And are exposed, and receive a sound mocking.

The key point Hawking makes is correct. Until we have self-sustaining colonies outside of earth there is a high risk of extinction - self-induced or caused by a an asteroid.
However even if we have one or more self-sustaining colonies they could get wiped out for the same reasons as an event wiping out man on earth. Thus we would need many such diverse colonies. His guess of 100 years to have many such remote colonies seems reasonable.
I think the greatest threat is terrorists getting ahold of stockpiles of nukes. Thus our risk of extinction continues even with multiple remote colonies once terrorists are able to infiltrate those colonies.

Humans have always used cutting rdge technology for evil plans. Only the tech changes, not people.

One thing I recall is they said Hawking is not as highly thought of in the profession. Never trust a physicist over 30. Newton and Einstein peaked at about age 26, and Hawking probably did too. Many physicists get quite batty in old age.

Hawking is a PC poster boy and is incredibly overrated as I’m sure many of his colleageus, behind closed doors, would concur. Who really gives a s**t what he has to say about anything?

He's exactly correct. We marvel at the new technology, but it pales to what's being researched and developed regarding AI. I Robot.

Hawking believes humanity might be contending with in the coming century are fallout from human-induced climate change, nuclear war, and genetically modified/engineered viruses My theory is the sun's going to unexpectedly explode. We'll have about 13 nanoseconds warning, then we'll be vaporized.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see who's right on this one.

It will still be evolution, just man or machine made.

His reference to human induced climate change basically torpedoes the respect that I have had for Hawkings. I thought that even a theoretical physicist stuck in a wheelchair and basically insulated from the real world by his medical condition could recognize a scam.
