That aside I thought you folks didn’t put anyone on the witness stand without knowing first what he’s going to say.

Ted Cruz, IIRC, was always an appellate lawyer and not a trial lawyer. Still, that was a terrible lapse in judgment. Trump kinda had the same problem when he unleashed Sarah Palin, but then Sarah Palin was a known quantity. Cruz should have known that Glenn Beck was a loose cannon. This was a self inflicted wound.
