Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) has been dogged on the campaign trail here in Iowa by a curious protester: a young man holding a sign that states, "Ted Cruz likes Nickelback."
Nickelback is a Canadian band that has become synonymous with bad musical taste.
The protester appeared at various Cruz events earlier this month and photos of him holding the sign have gone viral. Saturday, he showed up outside a rally hosted by Cruz's super PAC. He was dressed in a Royal Canadian Mounted Police uniform and stood behind Canadian flags he placed in the ground, as well as a picture of Cruz's face inside a maple leaf - very similar to an image put in an ad by a super PAC supporting Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)
The young man would not give his name or his affiliation, despite boasting that photos of him have whipped around the Internet, and that one appeared on the front page of The Wall Street Journal. "They're both Canadian," the man said. He also handed out copies of Cruz's birth certificate. "I just don't want, really, a Canadian in office. It seems like he's got a lot of controversy behind him whether he's a U.S.-born citizen or not and I'm just out here making a statement."
Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Nickelback is also from Alberta. The band weighed in on the sign earlier this month.

And all along, I just thought the original photo was a photoshop joke. It’s the one with the guy standing in the snow and a bus is heading towards him.
But the guy is for reals? lol!
I don’t know why it’s such a sticky meme for me. I’ve been laughing about it everyday since I first saw his picture.
Next thing you know, they’ll be telling us Santa Claus isn’t real.
Politics is sure dirty.
Uh.... we are in the silly season. Everyone with a beard and a prayer rug is calling Jesus a liar.
I don’t know where the ‘Nickelback is awful’ meme came from, but they do have some fun with it...
This is the song that plays when I reach the 10 mile mark on a half marathon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbP1K-bQB6g
Never watched the video before tonight, but they really have some fun with the meme about them.
Hey, at least the protester didn’t say that Cruz LIKED “Brokeback Mountain”.
We know the answer to the question. It was somewhere between anemic and disappointing.
My brother was there; it was packed, about 2,000 people.
Also - it was aired live on C-SPAN; there were lots of crowd shots that made it clear it was a packed house.
For some reason Nickelback seems to be the band hipsters love to mock. I never really figured out why. Personally I think they rock.
Their biggest hit probably “Rockstar” that satirizes the whole rockstar lifestyle (”hey, hey, I wanna be a rockstar”).
Nickleback’s Lead Singer?
This is the use of the Alinsky Method at a savvy level. To cast your opponent as an object of ridicule in a skillful way is going by the “rules.” If Cruz can’t make a counteroffensive when these little things rear their ugly heads, he may be really flat-footed when the big bombs come in from the pros.
That’s not Waterloo....its Napoleon retreating from Russia.
I haven't heard them. Are they the "Spinal Tap" of this generation?
Their lead singer Chad is from my area.
A couple years ago my old man was surveying on his property. Chad shows up and was extremely rude and degrading to my dad. My old man would give you the shirt off his back even if it was in the middle of a blizzard.
Regardless, my good buddy will finish his 20,000 sq ft house this spring and I told him for his house warming party, he should invite Chad. I will have words at that point.
As for this guy being a douche at Ted’s events? Just send him to Alberta, we’ll take care of things heh.
+1. I got a chuckle out of the stunt and that is not good for Cruz.
Those were GREAT! Thanks!
