Refineries once used Pb in gas too. How did that work so much better? Should we still burn leaded gas so we can inhale the fumes in big cities?

Prohibition of (ACTUAL) poisonous products is a legitimate function of government mandating the use of something such as ethanol is not.

Yep, and you bought leaded gas and never complained about it. ETOh is toxic but not close to Pb. It is a replacement for Pb in gas. Recall, it came about as Pb was removed in order to boost octane and prevent premature combustion.
