Senate Bill Seeks To Outlaw Gun Shows [OK]
OK2A-Action ^ | January 23, 2016 | Tim Gillespie

Posted on 01/23/2016 6:58:50 AM PST by aragorn

OK2A-Action has uncovered an attempt by the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce to effectively outlaw gun shows at public venues statewide through one of the many bills filed for the upcoming Legislature. Considering that last year the Chamber of Commerce lobbied heavily against SB41 - an OK2A requested bill that would have closed a loophole some cities were using to restrict the lawful carry of a firearms at city festivals - the Chamber apparently is quite comfortable in the company of other anti-gunners like President Obama, Michael Bloomberg, David Boren, and the Brady Campaign.

Senate Bill 1347 was filed at the OKC Chamber's request and would bring to an end gun shows at publicly owned venues, such as the fairgrounds in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and countless other cities and counties across the state. They presented this legislative proposal to Senator Bingman as though it had the blessing of the NRA. It does not.

Current state law states that you cannot have a firearm in a public building in which the government is doing business with the public. The Chamber is proposing that the phrase "doing business with the public" be removed which means you could not have any firearm in any government building - for any reason at any time - which essentially outlaws gun shows at publicly owned venues. You could still have the gun show, but you couldn't bring any guns. It seems the Chamber of Commerce is not interested in commerce if it is associated with the Second Amendment even though gun shows make a substantial impact on the economy.

They also propose changing the business owners' rights to include making it a misdemeanor crime to carry a firearm into an establishment with a no-gun policy. It is currently a violation with a $250 fine. Some businesses barely mark their facility - either the signs are very small or they are not posted anywhere near the doors. It is not right to criminalize a person because they don't see the sign. The current policy has worked well. No one has been cited for refusing to leave if a business has asked them to.

When these issues were brought to Senator Barrington's attention (Senator Bingman asked Senator Barrington to file the bill), he immediately agreed this was a problem and has agreed to work with OK2A to make sure that the Chamber does not get away with this ridiculous attempt to infringe on our Second Amendment rights. Instead, we urge passage of OK2A-Action's request bill, SB1057, which does not further restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

Please call the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and tell them you like your gun show and would like to keep your gun show! You can reach them (405) 297-8939.

Please call Senator Bingman and ask him to make sure that the Chamber does not get away with this attempt to bring Bloomberg/Obama style gun control to Oklahoma. Tell him to pass OK2A-Action's request bill, SB1057. You can reach Senator Bingman at (405) 521-5565 or bingman@oksenate.gov.

Please call Senator Barrington and thank him for standing up against the Chamber as they attempt to outlaw gun shows on public property. Urge him to hear OK2A-Action's request bill, SB1057. You can reach Senator Barrington at (405) 521-5563 or barrington@oksenate.gov.

I agree with you two. I distrust what the CoC had morphed in to. Too many times have I seen them on the wrong side of issues that are important to me. More than once I’ve found myself deciding to not do business with an establishment having a CoC sticker on their door or window or web page.

Biggest gun show in America is the WANENMACHER show twice a year in TULSA!

And every time I go it is PACKED! It is so big it is hard to even walk by every table in one day, let alone "shop" if you are looking for something specific. It is a sight to behold!

“I wholeheartedly agree! In fact, I’d like to see a law wherein legislators and other public servants can be indicted and charged with violation of their oaths of office. There already exist laws that provide penalties for violation of civil rights under color of authority. How can we use those to turn the tables on these traitors?”

The law is clear, and we’re reaching the point where it would be appropriate to apply that law energetically. Those who interfere with our Second Amendment rights, with our First Amendment rights (including the right not to bake a cake, act as photographer, or otherwise participate in a fake wedding or any other ceremony/party that offends our religious values) and other God-given and constitutionally-protected rights should be held to account.

OKC gun laws always were strange... After years of fingerprinting, it was found that it served no crime control purpose the fingerprinting laws were done away with.

And things continue to evolve here, but not without a lot of effort and a lot of push-back from higher ed, the CoC and other entities. Still, we have some good people on our side down at the capitol, and we ARE making progress. I never thought I'd be as involved politically as I am!

On another note, here in wild-and-woolly Sapulpa, we have a gun manufacturer wanting to expand, put in a bigger plant and also (eventually) have a world-class training facility on the grounds. There are some hoops they need to jump through with the county regarding the piece of land they want to lease, but we hope they are able to proceed with their plans. You'd think the CoC would be behind their efforts, but so far all I've heard from them are crickets. Go figure.

Is the OK Chamber of Commerce or any chamber of commerce allowed to write legislation?

Those who promote, finance, and write anti-firearms legislation should be immediately arrested, tried, and convicted in a court of law.

Here’s a lib-demo at work in the OK State Senate trying to include a requirement to retreat before using a firearm in self-defense:

The recent special election victory by a Demo for a legislative seat, the first in years, appears to have them feeling frisky at the Lincoln Blvd. Asylum...

Any entity has the right to work with one or more legislators to propose laws that they believe need to be enacted, even the CoC. All they need to do is to get a legislator to propose and sponsor, or "carry" the bill during the session. Typically, the entity will work with one or more legislator to crafts the proposed legislation, then the legislator(s) will introduce the bill to the chamber(s) (house or senate) as appropriate. After that, it is subject to the rules and procedures of the legislature.

The first I went to was in the fall of 1970. It was in a building off from the IPE building, very small. Cigarette smoke so thick you could barely see twenty feet.

GMTA - basic political pandering while in a safe district seat, no political costs. He’s riding the same horse he’s ridden for decades.

Yep. And he apparently gets a lot of air time down in OKC.

As always; liberalism is a mental defect with no known cure other than a frontal lobotomy. I prefer using a 10 penny nail just above the right eye but a railroad spike will work in a pinch. No guarantees of survival with them though.

Using the nail is easy. Just tap it in with some firm hammer strikes then as you pull it out slowly move the nail around to mix up the gray matter some. The more the better I say. Afterwards a bit of cleaning with whatever you have laying around, maybe a tetanus shot, and a large bandaid.

Whaala. No more liberal. I hear it works every time although I do confess to not trying it out yet. Maybe one day when the civil war between the libs and the Patriots happens.

‘the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce...

has a members list. Threaten each member with a boycott and watch how fast they back off the gun show ban. This isn’t rocket science. If you want to be secure in your home and liberties, you gotta get involved in local politics.

Great point.

You are indeed correct. I am involved, much more so that I ever expected to be, and I encourage others to do likewise. It is an interesting and somewhat disgusting business, and you have to stay on them all the time. The look on some politician's or bureaucrat's face when you personally call them on lies or mischaracterizations, or when citizens unexpectedly show up in mass to protest a proposed county commission or school board action is priceless!
