Dear Northeast Freepers:
Please check-in to let us know that you're safe. If you want to share your blizzard experiences- whether funny or scary - we're listening. If you need something, please say so. Maybe we can help or get word to someone who can.
~Signed, Your Friends at Free Republic.
I've noticed that in the past about my bird feeders as well. Sometimes that would tip me off to check the forecast, and sure enough, there was a storm on the way.
I hope you stay safe.
Sounds like you have a mess to clean up when this is over.
Man, you spend a lot of time over here. :-)
Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis are all natural events.
What's the big hype over them, too? Right?
Last night, the local FOX newsbabe was actually wearing ski goggles for her outside in the death blizzard standup.
Which is what all the smug *it's only snow for ****'s Sake* people tend to forget. Which is that there's real people in tough situations who are trying to deal with this weather.
My sympathies
I keep a pair of chained-up tires and a floor jack in the back of the truck when the weather turns. I found it easier to swap tires than mount chains in the snow.
Stay safe!
Thundersnow is really cool but kind of creepy.
Whenever we get it, I go in. No knowing where the lightning is and how far away.
Oh, they are way tougher out there in Colorado. Real men. Foot of snow, no big deal. Shovel it out with one hand. 30”? Nothing to worry about. /s
A Pinto?
I’m going to laugh.
My dad bought one.
And it was the ONLY Ford we ever owned.
WORST. CAR. EVER.
If he sends any pictures, pass them on.
I went through a rough patch during the early ‘80s and needed cheap transportation. I found a ‘76 Pinto wagon (Squire Edition!) for $125. It needed a clutch and the serpentine belt replaced.
I dragged it home and did the repairs at the curb next to my apartment. With a fresh clutch and properly timed (probably for the first time in its life) that little car ran like a top and it would go anywhere. It was butt-ugly but it got me where I needed to go and performed great in the snow. Because it was so ugly I never had to worry about anyone bothering with it.
I drove it for two years and then sold it for $300 - giving it away. The only other thing I ever did besides change the oil was give it a fresh set of wiper blades.
Isn’t it funny how different an experience can be with something like an automobile?
It’s good to hear that everyone is mostly okay. States of emergency being declared this morning.
Those of us in flyover forget about the high concentration of people and buidlings in the Northeast. We tend to think a big snowstorm is just a little old blue norther. A nor’easter is very different.
Powdery? Odd, no? I’d expect wet, sticky snow coming off the water like that.
They said because the air is so cold the snow would be powdery.
;-)
Went for my morning walk. Great number of limbs down in yards. A few in driveways.
Everybody had their cars in the garage or out from under the pines - except one family and of course their car got hit. Small limb and didn’t look like it did anything.
However, I did manage to photograph the legendary Loch Ness Dobermann.
Trenton NJ 10:45 am 29F snow started at 8 pm Friday. Accumulated 16” on ground, about 9” on our sedans.
NWS says it’s heavy snow with 30 mph, gusts 45 mph. However, we’re near the Delaware River and I’d estimated 10-15 mph with 20 mph gusts with light flurries and little accumulation in the last two hours.
Very pretty. Lots of small birds because we provide thicket. Very few cars past our suburban roads.
Definitely not dangerous near us. Not seeing any kids yet. Nobody shoveling.
