Dear Northeast Freepers:
Please check-in to let us know that you're safe. If you want to share your blizzard experiences- whether funny or scary - we're listening. If you need something, please say so. Maybe we can help or get word to someone who can.
~Signed, Your Friends at Free Republic.
central va has 12+ inches and blowing snow. Visibility < 1 mile.
Also in NE Maryland, woke up to a foot. No snow on my front porch or on the cars, as the wind seems to be straight west-east.
I caught the tale end of Rush the other day commenting on modern blizzard hype. Something about a diary in the Donner Pass expedition where they became stranded in a huge blizzard/snow storm and had lunch on each other. In that diary was only one mention of snow.
I grew up with blizzards being the norm - 40 below, zero visibility, 40 mph winds and snow drifts high as homes. Natives from our neck of the woods think nothing of them.
Why all the hype over a natural event?
Im a duty manager for our American Airlines code share. We are based in LGA and JFK. As of yesterday at 0800, I had cancelled everything for the entire day today up until noon tomorrow and then a 25% start up in the PM. The airline reaction by the Big Three (AA, UAL and Delta)is unprecedented. There has never been a drawn down of 121 Ops (Air Carrier) since I have been in the business. I’m playing on FR today because I cant even move crews or airplanes into position because of the WX. I literally have nothing operational to do. Its like those first few days after 9-11 on our East operation..
Thanks for the link. Near I-695 and I-83 it’s blowing so much it’s hard to see how much has fallen...at least 10 inches and still coming down strong.
The Europeans have been naming winter storms for decades. I really don’t have a problem with it.
Deep snow always looks like fun from a distance. But, when the power is out and the snow keeps coming all day and into the next, the temperature inside is heading south, and you are 75 years old with an invalid wife, it can be pretty distressing. My sympathies to all in the Md. Del, PA intersecting triangle which is ground zero. Today may be pretty but it will not be a good day for most.
Glad to help. :)
I’m all layered up and about to tackle my personal Snowzilla.
As always, wearing an Alice Cooper t over the thermals.
Today’s pick, the ever-relevant “Brutal Planet” tour shirt.
Stay safe out there!
Are you from Antactica? I think the antarctic Circle is the only place on the planet that has the weather conditions you describe.
Most places in the US have never had more than 5 blizzards in the past 100 years. Perhaps you could name one?
Just a little less than 10 inches at 8:00 AM in Brooklyn Heights. I’d say it’s coming down at the rate of an inch per hour. Snow to continue until earlier hours of Sunday, so I’m predicting no less than 2 feet by storm’s end. The winds are calm but they were fierce earlier.
snowing hard here in Westchester county and i’m leaving now for my seven mile Saturday morning run...should be fun!!
I am in the upper edge but within the predicted 24" to 36" range.
The snowfall rate and winds have increased greatly in just the last hour or so, now coming down at 2" to 3" per hour rate and visibility getting near zero. There has been some "Thundersnow" here. We have about 14" so far, but are only half way through the worst part of the storm.
Watching local Channel 8 and there are reports of some PenDot snowplows and emergency vehicles getting stuck or sliding off the roads.
One thing I notice from looking out my 2nd floor apartment window, is that the snow is not sticking to the tree limbs. Seems like a very powdery snow. Bad for drifting and the clearing of the roads but good as far as the potential for power outages.
In Richmond, Va., we have 6” as of Friday, but more to come on Saturday. What makes it dangerous is that people here don’t know how to drive in 2” of snow.
‘73 Gremlin?!?
Oh bwhaha! My Dad was looking at Gremlins when they first came out, my Mom took one look at them and just slowly shook her head “NO”. So we stayed loyal to Ford Motor Company.
Bought a Pinto.
(don’t laugh dammit! lol)
MEANWHILE here in Greenbrier County West Virginia, it’s snowing like mad, 20 degrees outside, forecast is for up to 2 ft of accumulation but clear skies tomorrow.
No worries.
Hammonton, NJ - Still another 14 hours of snow to go (according to accuweather) with about a foot of snow already down. I think I can safely say the kids will be getting a snow day on Monday.
As far as I know, the shift is shortened in summer, to 1/2 hour. Winter is a one hour shift.
If you’ve ever been in DC in the summer...I can understand why.
Perhaps you’ll find your info here:

Ice is different from snow.
Here the heavy wet snow freezes at night pulling trees over the power lines then you’re out of electricity for days or weeks. That’s not solved by shoveling the driveway
“I grew up with blizzards being the norm -”
Ok, but most of us have not grown up with blizzards being the norm - with drifts to the roof tops.
