A TORY minister yesterday admitted Royal Navy warships being built on the Clyde could be made from foreign steel.
With the British steel industry already reeling from closures and massive job cuts, Defence Minister Philip Dunneâs admission was greeted with outrage.
Eight T-26 Global Combat Ships are to be built at BAe on the Clyde to replace the Navyâs 13 ageing Type 23 frigates.
Work is due to begin this year with the first ship scheduled to enter service in the early 2020s.
David Cameron has said at least another five general purpose frigates will be built on the river.
But Dunneâs statement to MPs has paved the way for quality British steel to be snubbed in favour of cheap foreign imports when the ships are constructed.
And there are fears there might no longer be a viable industry in the UK by the time they are built.
Dunne said: âSteel is sourced by our contractors from a range of UK and international suppliers, reflecting the need to ensure a competitive price and delivery at the required time and quality.
âNo steel suppliers have been selected or any orders placed for the Type 26 Global Combat Ships.
âIt is therefore too early to say how much steel will be used or from where it will be sourced.â

I just took a tour of the ruins of the Bethlehem Steel Works.
It is well worth your time.
Bethlehem Steel was on the rocks but still a viable company in the early 1970s.
It also had a history of being the producer of the steel in nearly every modern skyscraper (at the time) in NYC.
Then the World Trade Center development announced they were going to use foreign steel to build.
Bethlehem Steel closed just a few years later.
All those foreign lobbyists seem to be having the desired effect in the UK just as here in the US.
They probably have a hidden structural virus.
“Royal Navy warships being built on the Clyde could be made from foreign steel. With the British steel industry already reeling from closures and massive job cuts,”
Well, what are they going to do about it? Lower taxes? Reduce government regulations? Nothing is going to happen, except British steel will continue to decline, until she produces no more.
“.......with steel from China”.............
Much of that steel came from American in the first place.
They know that this is going to be sub standard steel, right?
An RPG would hit it from a speed boat and it just might shatter a hole in it.
Think ‘Cash For Clunkers.’ I have been told by junk metal brokers MOST, if not all, certain grades of steel were required to be sold to CHINA.
Like the Oakland Bay Bridge?
Just a few hairline cracks, and such a good price!
That ghost town is awesome. Spent 5 hours driving around Beth Steel in the mid 80s. Never saw a complex that amazing.
Whether it was thin sheet for tin cans, or 18 inch thick armor plate for battleships, Beth steel could and did make it. Such a loss to American industrial power.
The stories of the insane union at the "Steel" made me shake my head.
