News that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would endorse Donald Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary was first broken by people posting on an online chat forum, and not by members of the media.

I looked at that and instantly heard the ka-chung, ka-chang of the dial-up modem.

A FreeRepublic writer also posted the first eyewitness report of the Space Shuttle breaking up over Texas ..
Before NASA knew actually, since the shuttles can’t transmit during re-entry, NASA was waiting for their first radio report after the blackout period - and that report never came since the pieces were falling down over TX and LA countryside as they sat in Florida.
Wow, I never knew that part of it. I remember checking in to FR at about 9:02 Saturday morning and the first post was about Columbia being missing. Turned on TV and nothing for at least 15 minutes.
I knew we’d scooped them again.
It amazes me how many times a news story hits and a FReeper is nearby, knows people involved, has expert knowledge of the issue. Almost every time.
This is why I always use FR as my news source.

Told the whole workroom, (14 people), first thing Tuesday morning. A lot of excited chatter took place. One fool lamented "Oh great, dumb and dumber". He's from Staten anyway so he got a few laughs. Yesterday morning it was all over the news and my boss asks out loud "where did you hear that before the news did?". Said the FreeRepublic. We are the news. :-)
