British lawmakers blast Trump, but oppose banning him

LONDON -- Donald Trump doesn't have many fans in Britain's Parliament.

But a debate among lawmakers on calls to ban Trump from the country revealed little appetite to close Britain's doors to the provocative Republican US presidential contender.

During a three-hour debate Monday, legislators from Britain's main parties stood to call Trump an attention-seeker, a demagogue and a fool. Many, though, argued that he should not be stifled or banned.

"While I think this man is crazy, while I think this man has no valid points to make, I will not be the one to silence his voice," said Conservative lawmaker Tom Tugendhat.

Parliament took up the topic after half a million people signed a petition calling for Trump to be excluded over his call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States in the wake of extremist violence. Trump has also claimed that some areas of Britain are so radicalized that police fear for their lives.

Under British law, any petition supported by 100,000 people -- who must each provide and confirm an email address -- is considered for parliamentary debate. Monday's debate was intended to air the subject rather than take a vote.

Labour Party legislator Paul Flynn, who opened the session, said Trump had already received "far too much attention."

"The great danger by attacking this one man is that we can fix on him a halo of victimhood" and boost his popularity among supporters, Flynn said.

Parliament took up the topic after half a million people signed a petition calling for Trump to be excluded over his call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States in the wake of extremist violence. Trump has also claimed that some areas of Britain are so radicalized that police fear for their lives.

It was led by a Muslim MP. That says it all.

When you think about it British lawmakers committed a hate crime by even discussing a ban on a minority (Trump is smart and rich, which is a minority in GB).

No, it is not lost.

96% of the UK is NON Muslim. 92% white British/Irish/European. Muslims are not the largest ethnic minority.

Don’t confuse PC idiocy with conquest. The UK is still here and it will be here for a long time.

And as poster no 1 pointed out, this was never a ban, just a debate, which HAD to happen by parliamentary procedure as the online petition (signed btw by less than 1 in 100 Brits) gained 1/2 million votes or so.

Rather a shaky grasp of the British constitution there, I’m afraid...it’s the Crown which is subject to Parliament, not the other way round. (Oh, but of course I forgot...in American mythology there’s no such thing as a British constitution...)

“Sadly ignorant nonsense.”
“Rather a shaky grasp of the British constitution there, I’m afraid..”

Can I see this “British Constitution”?
I looked for it but I couldn’t find it.
I would also like to see your “British” Bill of Rights.

All the “1948 Nationality Act” did was an invalid and
laughable attempt to redefine subject as citizen.

Still, I would like to see the written form of your constitution with a list of your God given rights and not
your parliament or queen given rights.
A link will be fine.

The British Government had to do exactly that when Narenda Modi became Prime Minister of India. He had previously been banned from the UK for his alleged role in inciting the Hindu Riots in Gujarat in 2002 when he was chief minister which led to the death of up to 2,000 muslims.

Of course, India is only of peripheral interest to the UK, the US is a key ally, so you can bet your ass the British government would be falling over themselves to rescind any ban they were stupid enough to put on Trump merely for making a few mean comments they didn’t like.

Britain’s unwritten constitution

“Unlike most modern states, Britain does not have a codified constitution but an unwritten one formed of Acts of Parliament, court judgments and conventions. Professor Robert Blackburn explains this system, including Magna Carta’s place within it, and asks whether the UK should now have a written constitution.

http://www.bl.uk/magna-carta/articles/britains-unwritten-constitution

So, something that is unwritten exists? There really isn’t
a British constitution in the literal sense, only figuratively
and I would have to assume your rights granted by the state
are figurative as well. Funny thing is most of this is
within the last 100 years or so in a country 800 years old.

At the beginning of the 20 century amongst
protests by its own subjects and
possibly to stem the flow of mass migration to America the
crown granted certain reforms granting civil liberties to
it’s subjects.

I believe that England is a fair weather ally. I believe that
if the UK ever thought it had the tactical advantage they
would try to “reclaim the colonies”. The British have amassed troops and have attacked us before. I’m just
sick of liberals in this country holding the UK up as
the prime example of what we should be. And that is not
good, not good at all.

‘The constitution of the United Kingdom is the sum of laws and principles that make up the body politic of the United Kingdom. It concerns both the relationship between the individual and the state, and the functioning of the legislature, the executive and judiciary. Unlike many other nations, the UK has no single constitutional document. This is sometimes expressed by stating that it has an uncodified or “unwritten” constitution.[1] Much of the British constitution is embodied in written documents, within statutes, court judgments, works of authority and treaties. The constitution has other unwritten sources, including parliamentary constitutional conventions.[2]’

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_of_the_United_Kingdom

We have fought and died together since 1917!. And no, we wouldn’t reclaim the US. We are more than a fairweather ally. If you are an Anglophobe, be honest and say so.

There is much to learn from us, both good and bad. Things to take on, things to avoid.
