The only mistake Cruz made in the last debate was by not mentioning 9/11 first when he had the floor in the exchange. He could have mentioned how New Yorkers lead the way in uniting America against terrorism post 9/11 and how he would work to emulate that, unlike the current president who is a divider.
That would have taken that comeback Trump had away and instead given Trump a handle on a different cudgel to swing.
Or he could have mentioned Pearl Harbor. Or the War of 1812.
He mentioned that NYC is a democrat city. Trump went to left field and threw 9/11 in the pot. It is all about reaction with Trump. No substance but tons of reaction.
How about a debate where they ask trump about economy and Cruz throws out how trump cheats on his wives?
