Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) blasted 2016 rival Donald Trump on Monday, questioning his ties to Democrats and previous support for liberal positions as the two battle for the top spot in Iowa.
"If he's giving checks to Democratic politicians and he supports their views... then it starts to suggest, 'gosh if he publicly supports their views if he finances their causes,'" Cruz told Boston radio station WRKO. "Then suddenly when he announces as a candidate for president, every single one of his views changes - listen if he has had a change of heart, I am thrilled."
Cruz, who is competing with Trump for the GOP nomination, added that if Republican voters want a nominee who will "cozy up to Chuck Schumer - by the way he's written checks to Chuck Schumer, I never have - then you ought to be backing him."
The Texas Republican's comments come after Trump told ABC's "This Week" that Cruz is a "nasty guy" and "nobody likes him. Nobody in Congress likes him."
The two candidates have been locked in an escalating rhetorical battle this month after Cruz said that Trump represents "New York values."
Trump, in return, hit Cruz over previously undisclosed loans he accepted from Goldman Sachs and Citibank to help finance his Senate run. Cruz, on Monday, suggested that Trump's criticism was hypocritical, calling it "more than a little rich."
"You want to assess who stands with Wall Street? Then look at the actual records of the candidates," he added. "Donald Trump vocally and enthusiastically supported TARP, the bailout of the big banks. He vocally and enthusiastically supported Barack Obama's stimulus plan."
Trump suggested that the loans underscored that the senator is controlled by the banks.
While Cruz had long been reluctant to take on Trump directly, the two have stepped up their rhetorical barbs as they head toward the Feb. 1 Iowa caucus.
Trump has led the Republican field in recent Iowa polling, but Cruz claimed the top spot in a Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll released last week.
Trump is planning to campaign in Iowa this week with stops scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
While Cruz on Monday urged primary voters to study candidates' records, he sidestepped directly calling Trump a "fraud" or a "hypocrite."
"Those are your words," he told radio host Jeff Kuhner, adding, that he doesn't plan to get into a "food fight or personal insults."
However, he noted that "Donald seems very rattled right now. ...He's been launching an awful lot of attacks in the last couple of days."
So are you okay with Trump’s support of TARP or not? Or the auto bailout? Or Ethanol Subsidies?
If you are okay with it, you are not a conservative...
Cruz insulted Trump behind closed doors to his donors and started the attacks. He didn’t say anything before, because cynically it wasn’t impact his poll numbers at the time. Very politician—like to now opportunistically attack.
Are you really interested in going back and forth about how each candidate isn't perfect?
What amazes me most about Cruz supporters is how he is held up as the conservative messiah without recognizing the guy has his flaws as well.
Why don't you tell me something you don't like about Cruz and I'll let you know my concerns about Trump.
I remember an interview he did with Larry King when Trump was pushing DOH’prah as his Reform party running mate back in 2000...a lion can’t change his spots.

Feel free to use any or all of them.
“So Cruz compromised his âtrue Christian conservativeâ consistency why?”
I gave you a long, detailed explanation of why I think Cruz did what he did. Was it wrong? Maybe. But just because Trump has had several inconsistencies in past political positions doesn’t mean he couldn’t have been a good political ally. As I said, they were going up against a common enemy (the GOPe), much like the U.S. aligned with the Soviet Union in WWII. Political alliances like these are made all the time, so I’m not really sure what the point of your continued questioning is.
Anyway, you just keep pushing your cult leader and explaining away everything he says and does while trashing his opponents, and we’ll see how it all works out when the votes are counted in the coming weeks.
Has Trump blasted Cruz’s ties to homosexuals?
Pretty much, what kind of ‘true christian’ acts so sneakily, instead of being upfront with honesty. Cruz sounded more like a muslim doing taqiyya when he was sucking up to Trump, than anything else. And his closed doors comments insulting Trump were the tip of the iceberg it seems.
“Actually, Cruz did defend the bailouts in 2009.”
Nothing in the article suggests that Cruz supported the bailouts (TARP).
The article is on the Obama Stimulus program.
Federal payments had already been sent (and accepted) to the state of Texas. Cruz ventured an opinion on how a small portion of the money should be spent.
Trump was and still is a supporter of TARP.
Cruz was and still is against TARP (and the stimulus)
You’ll get another taxation agency, instead of the IRS, and Cruz’s plan is very similar to a VAT tax. The VAT Tax is far more dangerous to the average person than an income tax, especially considering he doesn’t want to abolish the income tax either, so you’ll still have to file that. VAT is a tax on consumption, and if the democrats get in, they’ll just jack it up, like the left has done in other countries.

He said that as an obvious joke in the ABC interview if you watch it.
If you’re going to post graphics, at least make them funny and/or intelligent.
I prefer truthful, which they are.
Liberal Trump has been a liberal all his life. He hasn't changed.
His supporters are perfect examples of NY LIEberal DUmocrat values on display.
Keep it up one of these days you’re going to slip up and get the zot.
When someone wants to make it personal and use my screen name in a photo, they are going to get it right back. I didn't start that, but I'm game for anything.
