GOP presidential candidate former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum says that fellow GOP candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is "misinforming the public" about him being a "natural born" citizen and eligible to run for President of the United States.

The Des Moines Register's politics reporter Jennifer Jacobs posted on Twitter:

Ted Cruz is "misinforming the public" by saying "natural born" issue is "settled law," Rick Santorum says in Iowa. Supreme Court must rule. -Jennifer Jacobs (@JenniferJJacobs) January 13, 2016

If you’re against globalism and open borders, you should be against Trump.

Trump isn’t just WINNING on the issues, he has set the agenda for the issues....like ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, building the Wall, stopping terrorist nations from sending us their ‘refugees’, taking care of our dear vets....

When was the last time you heard ANY of these issues being discussed/debated, during a Presidential campaign? Which previous Presidential candidate(s) have discussed these issues at length?

You must be confused. Trump was very clear that he’s for open borders and a global economy.

But that was before he was trying to get Republicans to vote for him.

They would go to wherever the prevailing winds take them. My point is simply this, to be a "natural born" citizen, both your parents must be American citizens, irrespective of your place of birth.

The child of an American diplomats or service members, both citizens, stationed in a foreign land is a natural born citizen. A child born of an American and a non-American citizen in a foreign country is not a natural born citizen. He or she may be a citizen, but not "natural born". Frankly, I have always felt that Obama was not a natural born citizen, even if he was born in the US.

We learned in grade school - the definition was even more restrictive, if you were not born in the US, it was understood that you were not a natural born citizen.

I agree with you. There are always a core of FReepers around their favorite candidate with blinders on. It’s frustrating.

Fact: Santorum is correct and the perfect interpretation of natural born citizen is not legally defined.

Knee jerk FReepers respond insulting Santorum. (This is not logical.)

Cruz was our darling for so long, it is hard to see his feet of clay, but we all have them. He was less than honest about his loans, he decided not to do anything about his citizenship issue until it may be too late (he really needed this Iowa primary but if people are concerned he’d be knocked out legally if he won...), and he can get quite mean —— to the people he professes to want to lead.

I’ve lost some respect for him. He is brilliant but maybe a bit spectrumy, hard to get along with. I don’t think Trump is perfect either and I do cringe at some of the stuff he says. But it’s not about what these guys feel and think. It’s about what they can do to free us again.

There’s nothing more fun than beating a dead horse. Take it to court already! (And good luck with that.)

Honestly, we have a lot to do with how successful the left might be at pushing the birther issue. There is a close to zero probability that a real case will emerge, given the mechanism for ascertaining candidate eligibility. The effort to cast doubt on Ted’s eligibility is mainly smoke and mirrors. To the extent the left believes they can peel off Cruz votes by scaring the ill-informed voter, to that extent they can get some mileage out of this issue. But the actual problem of eligibility is hokum.

Peace,

SR

Natural Born Citizen doesn’t require you to be born in the US.

Under the law there are conditions where a person born outside of the country is still considered a NBC/citizen at birth.

There is no legally binding authority to support the position you have stated. Jus soli (right of land) has been the dominant rule, but jus sanguinis (right of blood) has also been incorporated, even allowing for the possibility of only one citizen parent. It’s true this has never been tested in the specific area of candidate eligibility, no doubt because it is nearly impossible to pull off that kind of challenge. But the essential elements that define NBC status are in place and virtually guarantee Cruz would qualify, if such a case were ever to get that far.

Peace,

SR

“The child of an American diplomats or service members, both citizens, stationed in a foreign land is a natural born citizen. A child born of an American and a non-American citizen in a foreign country is not a natural born citizen.”

That is your opinion, not a law, once again we’re talking about here and now, how will this will be politicly resolved.

Trump is doing a great job of marketing. He’s distracting from the issues using hyperbole, vulgarity and attacks. He certainly isn’t addressing any issues in a meaningful way.

His typical way of delivering ‘meaningful’ insight on an issues is to say “he’s terrible” or something equally inane.

Right, what it does is document who his mother is. A mother who happened to be an American Citizen.

There are two types of citizenship; natural born and naturalized.

Naturalized is for those who were not American Citizens at birth.

Natural born are those people who are citizens at birth. He was a citizen at birth because of his mother.

Serious question for Cruz supporters. Can you tell us who is conservative to you? It seems that your'e picking fights against regions of the country, and against anyone who criticizes Cruz. Who will be left after you've criticized nearly everyone not named Cruz?

In post #59, I merely stated a fact about Santorum that his supporters would just as soon forget; namely that he had prematurely judged George Zimmerman--who, he said, had a "very sick mind"--guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin. How does that amount to picking fights against regions of the country or criticizing everyone not named Cruz?
