The standard political rules don't apply to Donald Trump.
We have seen him get through controversy after controversy that would have instantly ended the campaign of a traditional candidate and not only has he remained virtually unscathed but his poll numbers have actually increased.
Trump has struck a nerve in this country and capitalized on what is perhaps the most perfect window for him to run in thanks to the fact that people are more divided than ever and extremely frustrated with the establishment and status quo in both parties.
A recent poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal puts into perspective just how convincing Trump's message has been.
From The Washington Post:
Donald Trump, as I tell anyone who asks, defies virtually every political rule I thought I knew. There's no better encapsulation of Trump's up-is-down-and-down-is-up effect on presidential politics than a new number from the just-released NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. The question asked is a simple one: Could you see yourself supporting [fill in the blank candidate] for the Republican nomination for president? When NBC/WSJ first asked GOP voters that question about Trump last March, fewer than one in four (23 percent) said they could see themselves voting for him.
Wow.
That's pretty remarkable when you consider everything that has happened over the last year.
The media has been bashing Trump left and right for everything he says. Celebrities have been freaking out calling him racist and threatening to leave the country if he wins. But yet, here he is with a significant amount of support that only continues to grow.

Not really. If you have the time to go back and read every birther thread of FR, you will see more. I don’t have the time right now to go backwards and find more for you. But there are more. That is why I researched who Trump’s parents where. After seeing that mentioned multiple times.
The only rational choice in 2016.
Thank you, jwalsh07, I really appreciate that.
I know there has been some vicious back and forth between the two camps here recently. I got into it with one person in particular yesterday, and it just pushed me over the edge very sadly.
As far as Cruz’s eligibility goes, there is no way I would tell anyone who was born to an American, even outside of our boundaries, you are not NBC and you cannot be president.
That just doesn’t make any sense to me. The circumstances of Cruz’s birth pass muster for me. I don’t care about Swiss philosophers or anyone else. I say he’s qualified to be my president.
But I have to be honest and say I would feel a heckuva lot better if some authority would back that up and say no, a court is not going to later say he’s ineligible and then yank him, he’s good to go, there is no cause for concern.
I would be absolutely furious if the person I support or even already elected gets yanked by a judge. I am not even sure how I would react to that.
So, for me, it boils down to I would really like to get this settled ASAP, because it’s really difficult to work out who is a good candidate to vote for with the specter of eligibility being around.
just like scotch
Piss on all who think they own other`s votes.
If Trump wins the nomination I’ll probably vote for him in the general and hope for the best. But I’ll be expecting the worst.
“he attacks like a liberal.”
Thank God for that. Liberals are pit bulls and they will strike first and fight to the death. Republicans are pu**ies, and that is on a good day.
In my brief time here at FR, I view your posts as stident and incoherent without facts only emotions.
Are you running for the “peckerwood of the year” award?
I don’t own your stupid vote, I own who I say Piss off to. Watch your leg.
I’m just sick of all the jackals who are so eager to elect democrats at the drop of a hat. I have no use for them.
Take your vote and shove it.
“I will write in Ted Cruz on my ballot.”
He’s the Senator representing Goldman Sachs, right?
And take yours and shove it!
So Cruz’ point is that if one unidentified person using a screen name on an internet forum says both parents must be NBC, it Trump wouldn’t qualify? This makes Cruz sound more like a kook than a Constitutional scholar.
Seems to me your childish put down does nothing to persuade those of us who support Cruz to vote for Trump,Gee I hope your display of idiocy wasn't your attempt to persuade me to vote for Cruz...
According to your holier than thou thinking my vote won't matter anyway because I live in "the land of fruits and nuts". That's "the land" where this website and its owner originates from.
Speaking of obnoxious arse...
If there are more like you posted they are irrelevant to the discussion. The party offered a personal opinion unrelated to Constitutional requirements—and even the personal opinion was negotiable.
Your posting history says otherwise. You've been a Trump basher since the beginning.
This headline is an example of the sickness that our politics has become.
The candidates, together, spend almost a billion dollars "campaigning".
THE FUNCTION OF CAMPAIGNING IS TO CHANGE MINDS.
It should NEVER be a headline that it is "surprising" that people have changed their minds.
Leadership has it’s own rules. When you have a real leader, you might as well throw the rule book on what does and doesn’t work, right out the window.
No I will cast my vote for Trump or Cruz, thank you.
Don’t bore me with how you won’t vote.
