What an asinine comment.

Somewhat agree if this was “political” and I am a Cruz supporter and Christian. However, I will give him the benefit of the doubt. My family has been praying for the pastor and he met with the family so there is probably some emotional investment. The comment by Cruz is not inappropriate if it was not a political calculation. Sad that we are all (led by the media and hyper-partisans) reading so much into every comment and nitpicking things to death. Leaves little room for genuine heartfelt thoughts by any candidate (I think they all have these). Who really knows? Have we arrived at a place where the comment “thank God” is political?

While I am glad for the releases, I worry about the “prisoner swap” model we seem to have fallen into with these rogue regimes. Anyone who wants anything from the U.S. can grab some prisoners because we always seem to “trade” for them. This is a dangerous position. I want a President that is feared so people will think twice about grabbing our citizens in the first place. With that said, our citizens should think twice about going to a country like Iran and putting themselves in these positions in the first place.

If I go into Canada and violate their laws I don’t expect our government to swap Canadian prisoners for me or offer some deal that costs billions to secure my release. From a rational standpoint specific to missionary work we should examine why it should be any different for Iran or North Korea. There are ministries that are highly effective that do not place one in such a position using media. I suppose they had their reasons, but their decisions to go there have now impacted us all.

The situation with the pastor was avoidable. We would laugh at animal activists that go to African preserves and get eaten by lions yet we celebrate a pastor who does the same. If they are martyrs they receive their just reward - if they become political pawns between governments they are impacting us all. Just my .02 and food for thought about a difficult situation.
