I think Krauthammer has it backwards. Trump fell right into the trap that Cruz laid right in front of him.

Cruz's "apology" seen at the video below shows that he had this strategy mapped out. The follow up ad (that you know is coming) with the Trump/Russert interview clips where Trump espouses his "New York values" will drive the message home that Trump is nothing close to a conservative.
